Regarding the fungicide apps. The education I have that you like to make fun of, in combination with years of field experience has taught me some things. The reason I say 3 apps is the magic number is as follows. 1) an app with herbicide will hold disease down to lower leaves until flag leaf. 2) a flag leaf app will control disease until anthesis. 3) an app at anthesis will suppress disease long enough to fill.

If after those three apps there is still any significant disease pressure one should be looking at soil and fertility. The first culprit to examine is potassium followed by copper.

Overuse is not only economically wasteful but also contributes to resistance and is hard on the beneficial fungal community. I think you'll have to look long and hard to find a post where I haven't been an advocate of proper stewardship.

            Pottassium and copper?
            Funny you mention that.
<20% of farmers in my district soil test.
            But buy "protection"? Much easier.

It's not always the case but I've seen fields with perennial disease issues require little to no fungicide once we got the fertility balanced.

Thanks for the long winded ramble of the bare bone basics on fungicide application. Not sure who you trying to enlighten with a skiff of knowledge.

Just curious what documented benificial fungi is effected by registered fungicides in Canada? Is their a species of fungi that can withstand 2 applications but start to become affected thereafter?

All the testing done on the registered fungicides we use on our farm have been shown to have no effect on a laundry list of beneficial fungi.

I will agree with you 100% on the balanced fertility leading to less need for fungicide.

We used a 5 phase nutrient approached to feeding out lentils through the growing season last year. Right from burnoff to seeding to in crop herbicide. Sprayed all the lentils with Priaxxor leaving test strips. It was the first time we saw zero response to fungicide use in lentils on a wet year. Didn't even gain standibility.
