    RR property tax

Does anyone know if rr's pay property tax? If so to whom?

    #2
I once asked this question of the municipal administrator.

I was told (for instance) that CN continues to pay property tax to the RM on a railbed that is now devoid of ties and rails that once resembled snakes.

I believe the amount paid is hardly worth asking the question.

What CN did do was skip out of paying monies to this RM due to decomissioning a "grain dependent" line.

Now that amount of money was into 6 digits; and that amount may have been per mile of track.

Oh !!! clean up was not required; and I understand getting CN consent for crossing and culvert repair is just about impossible.

Thats called dealing with a mainline railway.

Lately they are up to knocking out the switches at both ends of sidings. And that particular siding is in better shape that the "mainline" beside it used to haul unit trains of oil and grain.

Contact the Dep't of Highways if in Sask. They do have a department in Regina (Victoria Ave) that is strictly dedicated to the oversight of every railbed, associated warehouse and anything to do with rail changes or abandonment proposals in that province.

Railways do pay tax to the R.M.s. Our abandoned branchline was offered for sale and landowners were told to purchase it back on each quarter. Lawyer gave a cut rate to do all ties. No more tax on this property from R.R.s.

Well it might be argued that any court case should be taken up by the municipality; and not costs not borne by individual ratepayers.

It could be noted that SARM did once have this issue on their agenda; and I am told by a former reeve somewhat closer to the "Lewvan terminus" that RM's did indeed get the "grain dependent" compensation entitled too. Perhaps it was a case of Coalfields and Enniskillen deciding to go it on their own; or maybe just a case of not being in the appropriate or proper or suitable or even right "league".

In any event next to no one gives a shit; either then or now and it matters little in the big scheme of things.

Isn't that why we pay the council remuneration bucks ..... in order to get the representation that is deserved.
