    Growing crops.

Growing crops is like raising children. From the time the seeds are planted to harvest we nuture them and try to do our best to give them what they need to be successful.

We invest in them. Emotions, time, money, effort. So is it any wonder when something comes along that threatens them we are deeply concerned.

If there wasn't so much invested we wouldn't have
to care. Like watching a sick child that you've done all you can for, so is it watching a crop suffer from circumstances beyond your control.

You would have to have a heart of stone if watching
a crop suffer from too much or too little rain,
flattened by excessive rain, pulverized by hail,
couldn't germinate because it was too dry, wind scattered swaths, you name it....didn't bother you.

Its easy to celebrate the successes but difficult to mourn the failures..... anyone who is passionate about it would understand. Its not easy, and after years the challenge can wear you down....and you concede.

Take care this harvest everyone, there is no guarantees you will get out "everything" you put in.

I so agree with your sentiments. But some say it's a business, lose the emotion. Sorry but after 43 crops I have had every emotion, and memory is vivid of highs and lows. I have used the child analogy myself, you free similarly. Well the "kids " have grown and left, so next emotion is whether to concede...just as tough a decision as the millions made before now. Good Luck all, hope it's not washed away in the morning, high winds and rain now. I hate our north facing bedroom in stormy weather and N winds, might need the earplugs.

In our early days of farming, we filled the chimney hole with a tin patch on the roof of the old farm house so we could hear the rain. I thought about attaching the garden hose to the roof so I could hear the rain. Drought is a real downer.
