Wether it is interest rates low grain prices hard to borrow money or other farmers got deep pockets it has always been a risk to buy land at that given time.Wish it was possible to turn back the clock but you can not.Saskatchewan farmers own property in other countries.Sakatchewan is open for business.many farmers are chosing not to sell and rent as they see the value of owning saskatchewan land too.And around here farmers have adjusted to the new prices and are buying again.

Why would any farmer want his land prices capped by not allowing competition? Makes no sense to me. I farm to increase my equity and wealth. Land prices have more than doubled in value here in s mb in the last 5 years or so. So im worth twice as much for doing nothing but owning a good investment. perhaps some guys think they will build wealth by renting or buying cheap land and producing more grain to sell. Good luck trying to double your net wealth in 5 years going that route. I hope land goes to 10k per acre.

Endless money printing has lined the pockets of all these big investment companies, banks and corps. At any price land is cheap for them because it is an asset that can't be printed.
For the little guy all that happens, is they owe the banks a big fat mortgage to buy expensive land then they can't compete on a worldwide basis with cheap land farmers in Russia, Asia and India.
I am all for free markets but outside investors in farmland will hurt in the long term. In the short term...RedHead gets another condo in Maui!

Look, I want to capitalize as much as the next guy and get as much as possible for my assets. But what are the economics of buying this land that will never pay for itself in a lifetime? Neighbors kids whose parents cant even afford to take the risk helping their kids buy it. Something wrong with the picture when those trying to make a living on it can't afford to buy it.
Just wait until reality sets in. It wasn't that long ago when land sat idle because no one would farm it. How good of an investment is that going to be for investors looking for a return on their money. When something else comes along that is a better return and less risky they will be gone.
We don't owe anybody anything when it comes to making cheap land available. But I do feel for young people who want to start and it is almost insurmountable task to get started.
Big difference if your looking for a place to "dump" cash or borrowing to pay for an overprice asset.

I really don't see "the investors" making any difference in land prices in our area.
In fact it's been a good thing, they've bought some land no one else would buy and provided an exit for the guy wanting to sell.
It shouldn't be regulated anymore than anything else is in my opinion.

Farmaholic.that story was going around as long as I have been farming since 1976.Seen most my age not make it.Went to the city for 2 good jobs.I stuck it out.Investor land is at least available to young farmers willing to work.if investors were not buying do you really believe these young guys would be able to buy? And for sure the big farmer would not rent it to them.

Bring on foreign investment....then when your grandchildren are starving because China came here and bought up all the land to feed their country, you can proudly tell them you made more in the sale than your neighbour.
This 'society' has been good to us, has given us lots...but now our society honors the dollar above everything else...we will get what we deserve.
