lentil samples so far are dismal at best. A lot of lentils are still in the field and looks aren't improving. To get #1 s, it seems they have to be swathed and in the bin on August 15. Our reds are in the bin but French are still out. 200 acres of Canola cut. Farmaholic, we too are hoping that this 1/2 inch rain will hold the swaths down, It was pretty ripe and bushy when cut. Maybe some goose dung will help too.

Guestimate a little better than 30, will know better when the fields are done. We are the only ones doing canola here. We had an early start this spring. After all the hand wringing this spring over frost damage and beetle pressure and shit for rain during the growing season I am more than satisfied with the results. Thank you. ...

1.7" from April to the August. With recent monsoons the moisture probe went in two feet on pea stuble on a hill top. Had another inch since then. Glad the peas are off but they were pretty shitty coming in at exactly my crop insurance yield barely holding grade. Filled the neighbors contract cause they wanted to charge him a buck a bushel on top of price difference to get out. Criminal!

Desicated my best field of canola Friday and it was shittier than I thought and trying to flower again. I figured this would be a good opportunity to experiment with straight cutting since I'm already in crop insurance territory.

I grew 900 ac Amerillos along with Meadows. Amerillos looked good for the yr we had, none in bin yet, been doing lentils 200 ac left out of 1900. Will be growing Amerillos next yr.

Thus my thoughts on another thread that the potential canola crop is getting bigger. A lot bigger.
Frost is going to be a factor for sure. Can't escape it now. These rains are holding back a lot of crops from finishing off. But the potential is there.

Have had enough rain to dampen the ground and that's enough for me!!!!!

We still have substantial reserve subsoil moisture, carryover from record wet last few years and despite fairly dry summer.
Hoping that areas one hundred yards out from slough margins will come back into production instead of water logged soil and no crop.
Remember enough years when it was best crop to work at getting them back in shape for next spring seeding.

Agree with thought that canola crop is getting larger and rain likely much less damaging than frost.

1.5" overnight. 5.1" in last 30 days. Amarillos stood great and were top yielder on our farm this year. Few days off to recharge now and swath remaining canola next week. As far as swathing lentils, have fun. Witnessed a few occasions where we received a #2 and swathed received a #1. Big whoopee deal on a 2-3 cent spread. Also witnessed a few times swathed lentils entirely rot in the field and be basically worthless while straight cut brought a #X3/3. Swathing lentils is a waste of time and far too risky in my opinion. Swathed lentils around here this morning laying in water in low spots.
