    Canola, interesting comparison....

This year's canola crop with the lack of rain will yeild better than the 2012 canola crop which did about 17 bu/ac because of a very bad scleritinia infection and wind loss!!! Not that the 2012 crop was good to start with but at least is had enough rain and probably would have done better had I sprayed for disease.

p.s. why has there been pelicans in a 30 acre marsh slough on our land(SE of Regina). Been here for a bit. What are they eating?

They eat minnows.... we have them here all the time.

It's a shallow open marsh likely not more than 4 feet deep when its at its fullest, shallower now. I doubt there are minnows in there but they have to be finding something.

Haven't seen one minnow in the calling lakes all year, just piles of carp. No perch and next to no pike either.

2012 was bad year for aster yellows, see none in canola this year.
See cormorants along with pelicans in some sloughs this year.
            Both fish eaters, minnows

Aster yellow was the big problem in 2012!

Hopalong, You're right, aster yellows was also a big problem in 2012, I forgot. But we got slammed with sclerotinia way worse, aster yellows was almost a non issue here. It was even up the side slope of hills, not just in the low spots. That experience changed my mind about fungicide applications for ever, if it "needs" it, it gets it.
Funny thing is it was CSCO contracted canola and I had 15 bu/ac prepriced and it went 17.

Re Pelicans: they are not a usual thing here and if there are minnows in that "slough" I don't know how they got there. The damn thing must nearly freeze solid every year

                  Farma,

Our biggest recks growing 'Canola' have been CSCO. Nexera used to be bad for green seed and lower yield as well... but newer varieties have been a big improvement. CSCO is starting to close the gap as well... but it is hard to beat 135C LL Canola in our country! Last year 90 days to swathing... June 1-Sept1... and made close to 1t/ac. Will be interesting to see how 135C LL does on 6 inches of precip to swathing! Looks like close to same yield.

A lot of the luck in growing the 2015 crop can be attributed to the Wet years that came before. Now throw in a dry winter and dry next summer and some areas wont get two in a row.

I notice my ground has mellowed this year.

Even with a shitty to no crop due to poor germ. With timely rains next year there could be good crops.

Record crops just seem to cause problems for the middleman anyway. They don't need the headache.

Locally the elevator eith a 38 car spot and 10000 tonnes is 2 weeks behind on cats.

My point was lots of the guys who are getting a crop this year on only a few inches of rain can thank the last 10 or so wet years. Crops roots go deep for water.
Yes Timely rains can give same results.
four good separate one inch rains at right time is all a farm really needs.
