    StatsCan... Agriweek comment...

    From Morris W Dorosh Agriweek Sept 7;
    Title: July 31 grain and oilseed stocks are near average
    Crop-year-end grain and oilseed stocks return to more usual levels

    ..."The underestimating error for the last two harvests is almost half a million ton- nes. Large differences in farm stocks from one report to the next make it hard for grain companies to anticipate off-farm flow.
    These errors obviously arise from the information that is provided by farm- ers in the course of Statistics Canada surveys. Many farmers, it seems, see a value in under-reporting both what is in their bins and what comes off their fields. There does not seem to be much that can be done about it. The Statis- tics Act requires that farmers respond to surveys but it has no power to make them tell the truth."

    Don't be surprised when Statscan is required to change reports... because you guys say this yourselves... YOU LIE to Statscan. So be it. We reap what we sow.

    Some posters even brag about reporting false information.

      Not to mention the fact that statisticians make errors.

        Not too sure what difference it makes what is in farmer's bins anyway.

        The stocks remaining were obviously not for sale at the prices offered, and they won't be for sale this year either unless prices go up.

          they should just can stats can , period . it's a joke l they are still trying to figure out seeded acres . and like someone else said there isn't a bushel of canola left in farmers bins in these parts , how about your area Tom , any there ?.. maybe this new one is just bullshit , to help lower price . I not believe there is any carryover at all ????

            By the end of August farmers had delivered 920,900 tonnes of canola into the system.
            The question is how much of that was new crop? Was there a lot of canola out of the field and off the farm by August 30?
            Maybe 1 million tonnes of on farm stocks July 31 isn't too far off.

              Some August delivery will be new crop since there was canola harvested by Aug 31 here in S AB.

                Most canola in southern Alberta was harvested by aug 31. Everything canbra in Lethbridge crushed for the month was mostly if not all new crop. Hate sting down here started in the second week of August. Lots of canola was swathed in July even

                  In oil country in western Sask and areas in Alberta , there are many farms with a lot of carry over canola from 1 or 2 or even 3 years. When you have a big second source of second or third income (cattle the past two years) a lot of those guys did not need to sell canola or just did not because of tax implications. Things have changed a bit over the past 3-4 months in both sectors. IMO, that's were the extra canola came from. ITs not sitting on grain only farms - well 95% of it aint - JMO.

                    Some of those guys have had the ability to hold for 2 to even 4 years if the wish to wait for $14 canola again - if it ever gets back there is not the point - they can wait er out till things change , and things have changed. Both oil and drought in those areas have shifted the mindset a bit.

                      Derail;

                      Ergo the land prices in some.of those "areas".

                      Re: StatsCan, they quit calling when I refused to responde, even after the threats, for rhe umpteenth time. And I was never disrespectful or impolite.

                      Why is it so important that everyone one know these numbers? What's wrong with a little secrecy when it comes to production and avaiable stocks?

                        Until all other in the supply chain report, I see no reason to report either.

                        They want to blame farmers - **** off - find a new methodology to determine what's out there.

                        Or make it mandatory for all industry players to report.

                              Now if you can 500 to 1000 more like him you can find the statscan errors.
