I looked through the comments re the barley decision and found not one yea or nay regarding the proposal of removing Alberta from the designated area.Is it the best solution: obviously not. Does it appease open market supporters in Saskatchewan and Manitoba:no. However if we look beyond the basics it does provide some positives. First I do believe it would be supported by the majority of Alberta Producers. Meets the criteria of being a majority farmer decision.Maybe a wheat board option could be provided for those in Alberta that want it. This proposal might also bring pressure on the board to provide some meaningful producer options instead of unfulfilled promises. It also addresses the right wing, left divide we see in western Canada. As someone else said you fight the battles you can win. I do not believe a parlimentary debate by a whole bunch of people who have no background in farming, who don't live in the designated area and probably really don't care about the outcome is an appropriate avenue to address the issue.

Craig,
Something needs to be done.
I am putting together my Winter Wheat seed plans... the CWB program is a fraud for the select Program.
I was told CDC Falcon is one of the most popular Winter wheat varieties in the PNW... and it doesn't qualify here even though it has a 10% yeild advantage!
And how many times do farmers deliver to the Winter Wheat Select program?
Not once in 5 years have we got the select premium, most others are the same way.
The pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, that is what the CWB monopoly is!
No Way to pay bills with it, or encourage next generation to be grain growers!
The CWB needs to let the monopoly go on: CPS, Winter Wheat, and Barley; Let it go NOW. They BOD can easily do it tomorrow with one CWB Board Order.

lohner,
IMHO This is NOT a charter issue That has been decided at the cost of millions of growers and taxpayers $$$.
It is clearly an issue of political will.
If I was Premier would I take us out of the Designated area?
Would you?
A simple vote, with 66% approval for the "single desk" required to keep Alberta in the "designated area" like Ontario and Quebec require... may be the best solution to solve this issue.
Does the AB Premier have the motivation and will to hold the vote?

How about this idea.......
Instead of Alberta opting out of the Designated Area why not put the vote to Parliament to make wheat deliveries to the CWB optional in the western provinces or mandatory in all provinces (It is after all the CANADIAN Wheat Board). I'd like to see how Ontario and Quebec politicians would respond if they had to explain to their farmers that they were going to receive a lot less for their production but the good news is that everyone will get the same price.
Based on the Hansen ruling it appears it's a lot easier to get commodities included in the CWB Act than it is to remove them so let's bring the eastern boys onside and then see if they still think the CWB is such a good idea.

Thank you Tom. I will press further for answers tomorrow.
On another matter, how do you keep your perspective when half the replys to a post can't seem to be able to read well enough to understand or reply to it?
There's more pawin' n pissin' on this site than it's worth for educational purposes. More entertainment now. Fighting urge to stoop to their level.
Good Luck

I would agree with Tom. I do not see how this has anything to do with the charter. Certain parts of B.C. have been removed from the designated area and we are talking about an entity that only has jurisdiction over an area in Canada. The charter talks about rights and freedoms. I would suggest on both counts Alberta should have the right to go on their own just the same as other parts of Canada.

As a Saskatchewan Farmer I would love to be out of the CWB designated Area.
Hell my closest point to water is north or south.
But the big problem is Lorne Calvert and Ralph Goodale. Remove these two idiots and world will be a better place.
Both are either NDP or Liberal.
Hopefully after this falls election better times will come.

Craig: You said this:
" we are talking about an entity that only has jurisdiction over an area in Canada"
You are wrong.
Dead wrong.
The CWB is responsible for
NATIONAL LICENSING!!!!!!
NATIONAL LICENSING!!!!!!
NATIONAL LICENSING!!!!!!
Even Ontario must obtain CWB licenses.
Even Quebec must obtain CWB licenses
The CWB can deny or grant licenses
