$200,000 Tax on commercial grain growers

    Charlie,

CWB to provide funding for organic research and market development

    August 9, 2007

Winnipeg – The CWB today announced it will contribute up to $200,000 a year to a new research and market development initiative designed to strengthen Western Canada’s organic grain industry.

“Our goal is to have the organic grain sector do the kind of research that’s proved indispensable to conventional agriculture,” said President and CEO Greg Arason. “The CWB supports a variety of research and development projects for conventional wheat and barley such as research into grain storage at the University of Manitoba and value-added processing at Agri-Food Discovery Place in Alberta. We’re extending that support to a part of the grain industry that shows enormous potential for growth.”

Arason added that there are few other funding sources for organic agriculture and agri-food projects. “This initiative is intended to turn that around,” he said. “The money the organic grain sector will be able to access through the CWB will be significant in its own right. It will also allow groups to leverage matching funds through government programs such as the federal Advancing Canadian Agriculture and Agri-Food Program (ACAAF).

The first deadline for project proposals is November 1, 2007. Preference will be given to organizations with a public mandate such as producer groups, research institutions and certification bodies. Funding for the OSMDI will come from the CWB’s operating budget. For details on the Organic Sector Market Development Initiative, visit www.cwb.ca.

Controlled by western Canadian farmers, the CWB is the largest wheat and barley marketer in the world. One of Canada’s biggest exporters, the Winnipeg-based organization sells grain to more than 70 countries and returns all sales revenue, less marketing costs, to Prairie farmers.

    Charlie,

This is just plain foolish logic.

The CWB sets up a program, to spend $200,000 on organics, which goes against the majority of Organic growers morals, logic, and marketing strategy... forcing commercial growers to pay this tax straight out of their pooling accounts and PPO basis...

A reasonable person would say this is one of the best examples of government interference; of two WRONGS not making something RIGHT, we have seen... in a long long time!

      Tom

I am biting my tongue as this is coming out of Malt Barley final which is still the cheapest barley I sold all last year and the rest was feed.

They have no money other than producers no matter what pot they say it is coming from.

Is this the pay off for Stewart Wells, Flaman and the rest?

What the hell are these guys thinking???

The funding sources for this type of R&D should be either the respective prov govt or the feds. Or, as in canola, barley and pulses the drive and key support should come from the producers themselves and the crops commissions who collect levies and then leverage these funds with govt support to target the research and investment.

This smells of a payoff to certain people, and it stinks to high heaven. Small amount of money in the big picture, still does not make it right in my eyes. This is our money, we must hold them accountable....

This is bad, but only half as bad as the $400,000 they invested in grain storage research in Winnipeg. What does that tell you about their marketing plans?

I suppose this organic research is supposed to justify skimming funds from the organic growers when the CWB does nothing to help these guys.

I suspect that this $200,000 and the earlier $400,000 came from the "uncashed producer cheques" fund. Student scholarships and other such things come from that fund.

I'm trying to find out how big the fund currently is and how much flows into it each year. Last time I heard it was pretty large.

              Lee,

You must have skipped over this part of the news release posted above:

As an organic grower, I find the CWB;'s $$$ commitment offensive.

It could, for example, be awarded to and squandered on some organic farmer observing/recording the effects/impact/ of an organic grower running for political office in the next election.

Did REG buy an organic farm or is Roddy Piper gonna wrestle him for his seat? Is Queen Ralph going to FL to winter with the Purple Martin?

                        Parsley,

I find it offensive because I know organic growers who pledge NOT to take subsidies, or involve government.

They insist on a Free market system to earn their living.

It is sad the CWB cannot take a hint and butt out of a business they don't belong in, and a majority of Organic Producers have told them so.

Tom, The CWB is expropriating the organic industry, built upon free enterprise, and turning it into a Government-run, hand-out waiting, patriarchal, employee-infested entity.

Organics IS what the CWB IS NOT.
