    Farming UK Malt barley report

    31/08/2007 : Market Reports,News

    Malting Barley Report
    UK WINTER MALTING BARLEY
The UK winter malting barley crop quality can be described overall as average to good. Moisture and Nitrogen levels are higher than last year and barley size is plumper although Kg/hl weights are disappointing, reflecting the lower yields. Availability will be similar to last season.

Maltsters have reacted responsibly, relaxing quality parameters and waiving claims, so there is higher than normal acceptance rate, creating a bigger supply.

    UK SPRING MALTING BARLEY
Against all odds, given poor spring planting and growing conditions, the spring barley quality seen to date is overall much better than last year with lower moisture, lower Nitrogen and a bolder sample.

Unfortunately, the later bad weather has hit around 20% of the East Anglia crop, causing germination problems. Growers here should be aware that we may be able to deal with some of these for food malt.

On a positive note, Scotland currently is on track for a good crop.

    WORLD SITUATION
There is actually more malting barley available in the EU than there was last season, but the ever-firming feed price keeps pushing the malting price ever higher. We now need to watch the situation in both Canada and Australia. Any problems in either country could lead to another increase in the malting price and a widening of premiums.

    NEW CROP MARKET
The new crop market is very firm, but only on the back of this year's prices. The forecast is still for a much bigger EU malting area in 2008, due to better premiums and the predicted zero set-aside. We have the following buyback contracts available: Fixed price, Premium over, Min/Max or Marketing agreements.

Thought I'd better come clean on my identity for the few that know me on here being that I've WRAPped up most of my responsibilities elsewhere thought I'd go back to an old original posting handle for when I do have something to share ( useful or otherwise)

Nice to have honest folks to work with here... that have integrety and don't hide their identity.
