      I am borrowing from Darren Chases/Neil Blues presentation

      US cow herd size holding fairly steady January 2002 and July 2002 USDA reports - not yet in expansion part of cattle cycle yet.

      Canadian cow herd (prior to drought) has been growing but relatively slowly.

      USDA Cattle on Feed Report (October 1) - positive!
      On-feed 5% below October, 2001
      Sept. placements only up 2% from 2001
      Marketings 2% above September, 2001

      The downside is that US carcass weights continue to increase (16 lb bigger than a year ago).

      Slaughter to date 2002 versus same period 2001.
      Canadian fed steer slaughter up 1%
      Canadian fed heifer slaughter up 4%

      Canadian cow slaughter up 9%
      Alberta cow slaughter up 19% to 177 thous.
      Sask. cow slaughter up 18% to 82 thous.

      Cdn. beef production up 4%; pork up 6%
      U.S. beef production up 5%; pork up 3%

      The positives looking ahead are tighter fed cattle supplies. The negatives are continued expensive feed and lots pork/poultry.

        Charlie;

        Can you explain to me why CDN poultry prices are so low... when they are a supply managed food product?
