Would the only users ofwholly KVD wheat in the world not be our own domestic users. who are buying basically on a freight discount rather than on the superiority of our Canadian product?
I have talked to millers from other parts of the world who use alot of Canadian wheat just like they use Austalian (mill owners) and american Grain.
No importer relies on one supplier for all their needs ,poor risk management. The hits we take on # 1 yeild, disease resistance and novel traits are not enough for us as Western Canadian Farmers to accept this regulatory cost!
As someone said once farmers can deal with end users, or a middle man who can at least talk with their own customers, we will grow which ever variety they want us to grow as long as it meets their spec.

Lets throw Kanadia's rep as a supplier of quality grain, out the window. We are open marketeers. Let the producer and the buyer decide what is good or bad. Lets let the chislers and hucksters run the system. Lots of cash for everyone. Look at Brex, to hell with the losers, look at the winners, they got away with billions, even though it was fraud. The end justifies the means, we are open for business. Give us framers a chance we deserve a chance, to try and do the same. Let us become land barons and we will control, who eats and who doesn't. Burpie is right.State control is the only way to guarantee quality.Look at all those state quality powerhouses like North Korea,Zimbabwe,Albania.

These are the models we should be continuing to follow.Look at all the fine quality merchandise coming out of China right now PROVING that the one party monopoly system is vastly superior.

I assume then,Burp,you yourself never buy any north american goods since they are all created by evil capitalists who OWN patents and have to compete.

The whole premise of the need to retain KVD is based on us believing that we can only be competitive in the world market if we continue to flood the market with High protein hard red spring wheat. Does it really make sense to grow only premium wheat when a)we only really get a premium on a fraction of the tonnes we grow b) We can't get a premium in the market because in a high priced market no one is really prepared to pay the premium.c)we dilute the premium in the pool accounts by giving away quality to make sales. The market place is moving towards an identity preserved basis with trace ability. That will happen with or without KVD.

From the Wild oat Report. KVD is not quality. End users do not specify a kernal shape.Their quality specs often have little correlation with Canadian Grain Specs. Non registered U.S. varieties can still compromise the KVD system. Liability to producers is another scare tactic. Do you as a producer not think you can have liability issues with other grains besides wheat? Everyone in the grain system needs to be responsible if we want to maintain our reputation in the world.The goal of assessing liability is about keeping everyone honest in their dealings. It is not about putting a farmer out of business. Agstar. Thanks for clarifying the CWB postion. CWB staff have been running around championing the fact that the CWB is the leader in moving away from KVD. That is obviously not the case. Melvill. Dig up the numbers. Japan seems to moving well down the list of customers of Canadian wheat. There are still ways to protect that market without KVD. Northfarmer. Elimination of KVD in 2010 is not a given only a target. If the Variety registration system doesn't change its rules you won't see varieties in the commercial market place until 2013-15.
Everybody; don't make KVD a wheat board issue. KVD removal is about allowing producers the options and tools necessary to grow the best suited wheat for their location. It's also about allowing wheat to remain a viable cropping option for producers.Last it's about moving forward and trying to keep pace with our changing world.

I agree with you Craig on most of your points...and 2010 is a target......I do know that the CWB is tied into the issue because of how they see the implementation of non KVD grading issues revoloving around the reationship, legal and liability, of farmers delvering non registered wheat to an elevator...everyone wants their ass covered....how this is done will impact the producer if all the costs of whatever system they use is downloaded to the farmers....if done improperly we may lose much of what we may otherwise gain in moving away from KVD in the long run...
