It would seem that CBH Group, one of the biggest grain handlers in Australia knows how to operate a successful voluntary grain pool.

The return they'll be providing their growers in the malt pool that just closed is about Cdn $330.90 (midpoint of their estimated pool return, converted at 1 Cdn dollar = 88.24 AUD) or $7.20 per bushel basis port. The feed barley pool is expected to return Cdn $304.43 or $6.63 per bushel, again basis port. By comparison, the CWB's PRO is $6.14 for 2 row malt and $5.53 for feed (Pool A), basis port.
Looks like the CWB could learn a thing or two from the Australians about how to market barley, and how to successfully opearate a voluntary pool in an open market.
Where's the single desk premium the CWB keeps boasting about?
