    Voluntary barley pool

It would seem that CBH Group, one of the biggest grain handlers in Australia knows how to operate a successful voluntary grain pool.

    http://www.cbh.com.au/index.html

The return they'll be providing their growers in the malt pool that just closed is about Cdn $330.90 (midpoint of their estimated pool return, converted at 1 Cdn dollar = 88.24 AUD) or $7.20 per bushel basis port. The feed barley pool is expected to return Cdn $304.43 or $6.63 per bushel, again basis port. By comparison, the CWB's PRO is $6.14 for 2 row malt and $5.53 for feed (Pool A), basis port.

Looks like the CWB could learn a thing or two from the Australians about how to market barley, and how to successfully opearate a voluntary pool in an open market.

Where's the single desk premium the CWB keeps boasting about?

Sorry, that should read 1 Cdn dollar = .8824 AUD. Our dollar is currently worth more than theirs, so the Cdn dollar equivalent was determined by multiplying the midpoint of their estimated pool return ($375 AUD for malt, $345 AUD for feed) by .8824.

Say, Charlie, is there a way to recall messages on this board? Making one blunder in a post is forgivable, but making a blunder in the post that is supposed to correct the first one is downright embarrassing.

Our dollar is worth more -- so what I should have said was .8824 AUD = 1 Cdn dollar, or $1 Cdn = 1.133 AUD.

The calculations in the first message are still correct (I believe, but who knows now). That is, to get at the Cdn equivalent, you either multiply Australian prices by .8824 or divide them by 1.133.

I'll understand Charlie if you want to ban me from any further postings.

Hmmm I wonder what the excuse will be that this could not possibly work in Western Canada.

Hopefully when the CWB loses their monopoly powers an Australian company will buy the office in WPG and continue to offer pooling to those who choose to use it.

Or maybe we could do some fund raising to sent top CWB executives and the board of directors to AUS so they can learn about voluntary pooling.

Wait a minute why would we fund raise they might as well just take the money out of the pool.

Guys there are actually 4 companies running barley pools, and there are 16 different wheat pools from various companies.
Some are export pools, some are mostly domestic, some are a mix, others paid out in 5 months some up to 18 mnths, some pools are shut after only a few weeks to preserve equity and a number 2 pool opened or in some cases up to number 4 pool others open all harvest long

I'm also wondering what the mystery name Blairrutter stands for and means

Perhaps better returns for farmers or utters must be in there somewhere.

BlairRutter is a codename for Richard Gray, who has had an epiphany and now realizes there is no such thing as a single desk premium. Santa Claus maybe, but no premium.
