Pakistan postpones wheat tender until Jan 16
    By Lisa Shumaker

CHICAGO, Jan 9 (Reuters) - The state-run Trading Corporation of Pakistan has postponed a tender for 610,000 tonnes of wheat until Jan. 16 and reduced the amount of white wheat sought due to record prices, said U.S. grain traders on Wednesday.

Pakistan was seeking 150,000 tonnes of white wheat and 460,000 tonnes of winter wheat for shipment by Feb. 25, the traders said. Bids will be opened on Jan. 16 with results expected Jan. 17.

Pakistan had been scheduled to tender on Saturday for 300,000 tonnes of white wheat and 310,000 tonnes of winter wheat. [ID:nSP26293] Pakistan was inviting bids on the white wheat from only the United States, Canada and Australia, traders said.

U.S. grain traders said Pakistan postponed the tender and changed the mixture of wheat sought after seeing how much South Korea paid for U.S. soft white wheat in tenders earlier this week.

On Tuesday, South Korean flour millers bought 3,300 tonnes of soft white wheat for $514.28 per tonne free on board (FOB) for shipment April 10 to May 10.

On Monday, another group of South Korean flour millers bought 11,000 tonnes of soft white wheat for $525.68 to $527.52 per tonne FOB.

U.S. white wheat prices hit record highs in 2007 amid tight global wheat supplies and strong export demand.

Prices paid to U.S. farmers for white wheat have risen 172 percent during the last year, surpassing $13 a bushel for the first time ever and reaching $13.60 ($499.71 per tonne) for February delivery to country elevators on Wednesday.

Something is not right here. If farmers are getting 499.1/tonne and companies are selling the same product for 527.52/tonne there is only about .70/bushel to get the product from the elevator to the end user over seas. Where can you get elevation, rail or barge freight and ocean freight for 70 cents a bushel.

        Stublejumper,

Check this out... hope it helps to explain some of your questions!

"Wheat...A smaller than expected Japanese sale and delayed Pakistani
tender brought out some disparity in the export bids for white wheat today,
but $14 was the prevailing number, marking yet another historic milestone
and stretching nearby basis above the $5 mark. Japan booked 1.4 mb of soft
white, about two-thirds of their announced intentions, and Pakistan moved
their tender to next week and cut the white wheat portion of the tender in
        half to 5.5 mb.
Weekly Sales...It was another slow holiday-week for US wheat demand as
USDA reported a net loss of 300,000 bushels for white wheat, leaving total
sales at 144 mb and 2% ahead of a year ago. Red spring demand came in at
1 mb, for a year-to-date total of 184 mb that is 45% ahead of last year.
Barley...Export bids moved higher this week as traders seek replacement
bushels for barley that has shifted toward malt programs off the Northern
Plains. USDA did report another 880,000 bushels sold last week, mostly to Canada, putting current year sales at 40.8 mb versus 20 mb a year ago."
