Panic As Snow Endangers China's Crops: A top agriculture official warned Thursday that snow battering central China has dealt an "extremely serious" blow to winter crops, raising the likelihood of future shortages driving already surging inflation. The weather crisis overshadowed essentially good news for China's farmers in 2007, a bumper year when grain production rose 0.7 percent over the previous year to 501.5 million tons. Farmers' per capita annual incomes hit a record high of $575 ; up more than 10 percent from the year before, although Chen warned they also suffered from rising consumer prices. "The agriculture and rural economy has maintained good momentum," Chen said. (CBS NEWS) (GUARDIAN UNLIMITED)

Severe cold and snowfall occurred also in Western Europe and Central China this week, areas that have a moderate climate and don't usually see freezing temperatures. And what about the snowfall in Baghdad, Iraq, a couple of weeks ago, a 100 year weather event? La Nina kicked into high gear within the past few weeks, noted by sharp cooling in the central equatorial Pacific Ocean:

          One more area to watch
India : Despite the brave assertions, it is believed that India is seriously scouting for wheat in the global market. The Government may be unwilling to take a chance as far as availability and prices are concerned, especially when elections are looming large. Explorations are going on rather quietly because of the ruckus the last import contract created. The Government is currently engaged in examining various options. A barter deal with Russia is being studied. Exercising the ‘call option’ is another step that is under contemplation, although the last time it fizzled out. Importantly, discussions with even the US are currently on for wheat imports. It may be recalled, the US could not supply to India because the latter refused to loosen the strict phyto-sanitary requirements. Meanwhile, the domestic trade has other ideas about the crop size.
