I read articles like this with increasing concern. I cannot imagine why any country would allow a sale like this. China is a communist country with a very poor record of human rights. China supports horrible dictatorships like North Korea. They seem not to respect negotiated contracts when it suits them. And even if they were a 'nice' country why would any country allow the ownership of thier land and resources pass to foreign ownership of any kind.
Here in Canada we have just allowed one of our bigger oil producing companies to be sold to a state owned Chinese company. I am baffled why our so called conservative government would allow anything in Canada to be sold to a communist state owned company.

The day is coming when OZ will regret
this. Need the Chinese to come to pay
3x what locals will. The reason the
CNOOC deal went ahead in Canada was we
had to. The only thing happening in
Canada is oil sands investment. Anyone
who can operate a calculator can figure
that oil sand projects loose a lot of
money at 65 dollar oil. (Check the
Edmonton par price) So only the Chinese
who are pros at building the bridge to
nowhere can make it fly. The Chinese
figure that they can control enough
variables like the price of oil in
various markets so they can make
      anything fly. Without foolish
investment in the oil sands in Canada
our economy would be in a big recession.
Without the Progress deal the employee
of progress would be on EI right now so
that deal had to get done as well.

not sure if thispurchase is china state or china
private, but in all fainess any offshore
investmemt must follow our rules and we can
make new ones any time we want, for the best
interest of our country,at least with ag land we
are not giving away any company secrets

The canadian government had to protect Potash Corp because the high priced directors that are entrusted to do the right thing were lining their pockets.

Ipsco, a saskatchewan steel company born in the 1950s, was made into a leading North AMerican powerhouse, was sold off, first to the swedes, who then in turn pieced it off to the Russians. Now called Evraz. The BoD sold it off to line their pockets, where do you think the profits go now?

Sadly, no one gives a shit about canadian farmland or farmers because they would rather buy shit from the chinese that is laced with carcenigenics (spelling) to save a buck.

It will be funny when these same consumers are buying food from the chinese, all the while wondering where the Canadian farmer is?

In Canada we do not sell land to foriegne buyers as yet, at the moment we have only new immigrants buying land. In Australia I think their main fear is loss of tax revenue because the Chinese company is most likely going to sell the grain to the parent company direct and for no more money than they have to to pay the farm expenses, so 0 income equals 0 tax. What will that do to local grain prices? Seems to me the Australians are victoms of a lower grain price than what they should have considering their closeness to port. This could be a result of grain merchants making too much money in the first place.
what about the local well being of the workers and others in the area at what we consider municipal level. Is there a Medical emergency helicopter? Is there medical coverage there? What about retirement funds? Good drinking water? These are examples of things that the aussies should be thinking about when foriengers such as the chinese come to purchase such large tracts of land. The 0 profit of the farm and exporting companies could be bargained to get something else.

In Australia that would be very simple, shoot the pricks and burry them or feed them to some dingos.

Hedge I think about that what if as most others do. We still rule our countries as voters and can limit the amount of immigrants coming in as we now do. And we decide on the laws. Hopefully don't get to the point of feeding to dingos.
