We only farm 2500 acres and the older I
get the more I think it is too much,
funny thing is I don't remember when the
tipping point was. Some would suggest I
am lazy, others crazy. I make a good
living on it and that is good enough for
      me.

I do have to admit I like buying land but
      haven't bought any since 2004.

Farmaholic, everyone I know that left for Alberta or got a trade/ profession 40 years ago is way better off than I am. They are retired with big monthly cheques or annuities, beautiful homes, kids all educated, investments, etc. They were seeing the reality of primary ag when I saw $$ in the 70's.
Rural life style was great, however, my rewards involved more risk. Now we are stuck in dying communities that offer little to those who stay. That is the saddest part, slow motion death.

fjlip: Based on pure assumption, would it
be fair to say you might have the same or
better net worth as them, except it is
tied up? Any established farm that
cashes in their chips wouldn't be any
worse off in my opinion. Just if you have
someone(family) wanting to take over, do
you plunge them into perpetual debt?

I agree net worth is there unless next gen farms, then the gain will not be fully realized in our hands. We farmed so our parents never cashed out, in fact went further into debt because of that fact. Legacy value perhaps, not with out cost? What ever makes you happy, our parents are.

The lefties complain about the big bad
multinationals. The righties like me say it is their
choice. My comment would be that ....knowing LD
is competing against other growers and has the
potential and right to move into my area, I would
rather support bunge, Viterra, JRI etc and send a
message with my feet to LD

                Freewheat good points,
The thread is about a grain company getting to
rent Saskatchewan land that now so called
Canadians in Vancouver own. They chose multi
                national over Saskatchewan farmers.
It's not about me being greedy.
Choice good point vote with your feet.

freewheat, that's plus 1. apparently the
80's software won't allow the plus sign!

Dumb plan on LD's part on many levels. 1) that its
a drop in the bucket of their needs 2) what are
they going to have to pay people to run/manage
this operation PROPERLY 3) anyone here ever
wait 10 days for a custom sprayer or custom
seeder? I have and never again. 4) how many
guys (few) have to deliver else where before they
notice. 5) crop rotation anyone? 6) value of canola
lost when a big on farm storage bin heats. 7) if
they do decide to scale up to 100,000 acres isn't
the municipality and province going to feel some
heat then clamping down on this?
