World War I brought persecution from the US
government because huts refused to serve in the
military so as a group they made arrangements
with the Canadian government which granted
them immunity from the draft as a result almost all
of them move to Western Canada, Makes me
angry, my grandfather fought for four years in the
trenches in France came back to Canada a mess
so that the Hutterites could have the freedoms
that they enjoy today now we have to compete
      against them

A lot of mexican mennonites moving back to
Western Canada looking to purchase farmland, as
some already have, left this country in the 20s for
different reasons one being they didnt believe in
conscription while many of our family members
fought and died in WW11. Some of these people
have helped fill the labor shortage in Ag while
others are bidding up land prices to unsustainable
price levels. Talk of these groups building there
own schools outside our current public school
system in order to preserve their German heritage
that they so desperately desire all the while
segregating themselves from the rest of our
society. Personally have very mixed feelings on
        this issue.

Send emails to the farm land security board and help them track this foreign money that is coming in to **** it up for the young farmers that want to get into this business. I have been sending them info about a land owner from Ireland in our area. I have no problem with the Hutts buying and farming this land. At least they support the local communities. These foreign investors whether they are from overseas or other provinces do absolutely **** all for the local economy. I'm with you SF3, we have get after the gov't the stop this nonsense.

Ditto also I will send some emails to my MLA, I am trying to expand our farm....I am not a 20 somthing...but it sure is disheartening when you see the signs that show up along the road in our area saying wanted farm land call Doug and you know it anint your neighbour who is going to buy the land but someone from God knows where thinking that they can make a fast buck. My family supports our local economy...we contribute to the rinks, schools and pretty much anyone who asks we try and help in one way or another. I would take a stab in the dark and say all this foreign investment will go through a cycle...when no one will rent the land or either they see it aint all roses...LOL. Until then I will keep doing what I am and maybe my son will be able to buy more land to grow our farm.

Had supper last night with a old friend who said he works with a guy that moved from Guiana. (gold). This guy said the same thing was happening their Chinese buying or taking farm land from original owners. Lawlessness happening all over.
Those that say this is just simple business. I ask you, How easy is it for a Canadian to go to China and buy something their.
                  Simple question.
Or how easy is it to become a citizen their.

SF3, document what you have and send it to the FLSB. They can't make claims based on innuendo so give them something to work with.

The French in Quebec were against conscription as well. Presently, a greenhouse gas emission study regarding feeding flax to cows to reduce emissions is being undertaken by the Quebec dairy industry. They are buying their flax from France...now there is a thank-you because if it wasn't for the help of western canadian boys 7 decades ago, there would be no France today....and I have complete German ancestry.

You seen that. I have emailed saskflax wondering why are checkoff dollars are not being used on these types of projects.

They could have ground up 100 tonnes of triffid infected flax and could have killed three birds with one stone.

                        1. reduce some of the triffid flax stocks.

                        2. Found a valuable demand for flax.

                        3. Found a way to enrich milk with omega 3.

                        Pisses me off.

Any third party coming across this site would see the blatant racism; claims of chronic whining; attacks on those attempting to be messengers; hatred and self-interest. Those onlookers might initially miss the mass of fence sitters, apologists, and collaborators; because the havoc they wreck is conducted below the radar.
For instance, saskfmr3 saw something developing months before most noticed. And even though we will all have to go with the flow; the stated problem of increasing farm size is not just "Chinese land purchases" and "Saskfmr3 land desires". This particular issue should have been examined and addressed at the first instance; and not after it became a life changing trend for absolutely everyone.
Its time to stick up for the loners and their seemingly futile attempts to bring serious problems to the general publics attention. Maybe nothing could have been done; but the fact is that nothing "was done".

Don't be deceived into thinking such institutions as the Farm Land Security Board know basically anything about particular transactions. I just spent an hour on the phone giving specifics about what took a few days of research to uncover.

June 30/2013 is a magical date...OR NOT . I'm counting on an extension and buying some time.

I find it ironic that so many of you who are rabid free market supporters are not willing to accept the reality that in a globalized free market you are competing with everyone. If your going to promote that the market should decide everything, then suck it up. Because the alternative is a regulated economy and government intervention.

Indeed government does have a role. That does not mean it fulfills its responsibilities.
And as far as consumers go; free trade remains controlled by Honda, GM, JD, Case/NH, motorcycle makers, and every territorial dealership you can mention. Just check into the threats over any dealership in the USA or Canada.
But we vote for who will personaly promise to preserve our personal entitlements. And we fall for mega farms we are supposed to need to be profitable; and don't admit that such groups as Hutterites have a small fraction of the land (per capta) than any respected neighbor already hordes and intends to further expand.
And even for those who are attempting to do something about an imminent calamity; there is next to no support from those still left. There will soon be a relative handful that will control the whole show; .... and it will be extremely easy for the next transfer to be made to an even smaller number of true holding companies.

So much for being labeled as a believer in free enterprise or government being effective; or competing against every neighbor.

chuckchuck- Saskatchewan law is "supposed" to prevent non-Canadian residents from owning more than 10 acres so it technically isn't wide open free market rule. I believe a few people in this discussion believe the rules are being skirted. (which wouldn't surprise me)
The ownership rules might be wide open in Alberta and Manitoba though??
