Freewheat with your mentality why would any business bother to expand with the risk of possibly having to hire more employees. Might as well down size to save the headache and expense eh.

That is not at all what I meant. i do
think expanding can take many forms.
Forms that do notrequire more labour
expense as a requisite. My farm will
always be growing in productivity. it
does not mean that I HAVE to get more
land, or hire any more labour. It can
mean doing all kinds of things. We
farmers sure are stuck in the acres
game, aren't we?
The bottom line is that I see guys with
5000 acres NEEDING more land. For what?
Just for kicks or to be the biggest, or
are they really that poor of a farmer
that they need more land?
Is it indeed, ALL ABOUT MONEY? Is that
what life is about? To some, it is
indeed all about money, all about stuff,
all about doing as many acres as you can
with the least effort, so you can go to
Hawaii or whaerever.
To each his own...

Bucket,
"Building Rockets"....
Seeding $65/ac canola... with $100/ac fert... with a
$500,000 rig...... 25ac/hr... x 165/ac=$4000/hr.
Or harvesting 800bu/hr... with a $500,000 combine...
worth $15/bu. =$12,000/hr.
If you pay $20/hr... or $30/hr... who just might try
harder to add value to your operation?
If the $20 person is the answer... then they SHOULD be
getting $30/hr!
Work it out:
$1200/wk x 50= $60,000 per year.
Can you and your family live on $60K per year?
I DOUBT it.
Good people are the best asset any farm can have.
Cheers

Bucket,
Common sense is the first training requirement on the
letters after the name. Sadly only the school is; school
of hard knocks that teaches it... and for most it is an
actual gift they develop with a good mentor to teach
this dimension of risk management.
So... foresight into the future... to be able to see the
outcome of a certain decision.. (or the lack of taking a
certain action)... is key to how well the farm does.
Machinery and fields can be recked easily... and you
know who will pay. Training is expensive (the
mistakes)... so make sure they are a fast learner!
(ie: check references of other employers)
Cheers!

Dubsy, are you serious? I am not jealous
AT ALL. I see things so differently from
most farmers today, for so many reasons
it is truly unbelievable. I don't care
diddly about belongings, about things.
That is what may be hard for you to
get??? Stuff does not impress me, or buy
a place in my heart. A symptom of these
crazy times in which we live, is your
thought that because I do not get why
farmers are generally so bloody greedy,
and hungry for more, more more, it means
I am jealous. LOL! I mean, how sad. I
seed as good or better crops than my
neighbors, with a 1995 air seeder,
modified in several ways to be more
efficient, than 70% of my neighbors do
with their new paralinks. I truly am not
jealous. I farm better than many, grow
solid crops.
Maybe they are jealous when they see my
older rig growing better crops than
them? I dunno, and I don't really care.
All I know is jealousy is not in my
nature. If you knew me, and knew a bit
about my personal history, and how I
tick, you would realize this fact.
Cheers.

Freewheat, clearly there are those that maybe
have loftier goals than others, whatever they may
be. That is there business and who are we to
pass judgement on them. If you truly are content,
and I hope that you are, there is no need to
convince any one else of this.,just be content.
Those that don't have time to feed a goat may find
there contentment elsewhere. Salute.

Everyone on here who talks of $25 jobs isn't
enough. All those jobs that pay more are jobs
where you have to be away from family and not
coming home to bed. Also expenses tend to be
much higher. There is no comparison to those
jobs and a job on a farm, small town or even small
city. I have a core of guys who get paid $60k plus
some perks ( cheaper rent, trucks, cell phone)
and they have been with us for years. They get to
do different jobs throughout the year, time off
whenever they want, when its crappy weather
they work inside etc etc etc. comparing salaries to
a fort 'Mac job or having to live in Calgary is
ridiculous
