We don't need no stinkin' sales tax...bad enough that we have that !@#$% GST of Mulroney's era.
What's the point of prosperity if you tax it all away so politicians can spend/waste it for you?
Quit giving our resources away at fire-sale prices and the fiscal problem would disappear.
In this area alone we have had close to 100 new oil wells drilled and developed in the past year but it seems the only ones benefiting are the oil companies. One quarter not far from me has over twenty five storage tanks on it and from my window I can count fifteen on neighbours property. The roads are getting pounded to pieces from the tanker traffic...the oil companies do pay SOME for the damage but not near enough IMHO. Most of the oil from around here goes by tanker trailer to Hardisty and on to the USA by pipeline and some goes to the up-grader at Lloydminster.

Agree this time Will.
Except for the fact oil is world priced and can
simply stay in the ground.
Question. How many non value-adding
people/positions exist between gross and net?
Graft in the patch alone, would help the budget.
Freeloaders in our economy screw it up.
And yes it's hard watching it all from sidelines
without income from it.

When CN derailed west of edm a few years back... it
was BAD.
"Oil spill
Wikinews has related news: Oil in Alberta spill
may be carcinogenic
At 5:40 a.m. on August 3, 2005, 43 cars of a Canadian
National (CN) freight train derailed near the Whitewood
Sands subdivision, spilling up to 1.3 million litres
(286,000 Imp gallons or 343,000 US gallons) of heavy
bunker C fuel oil. An estimated 734,000 litres
(161,500 Imp gal/194,000 US gal) of the thick, dark
material was spread by high winds across 8 kilometres
(5.0 mi) of the surface of Wabamun Lake. [2]
Volunteers soon began placing booms and absorbent
material to protect the shoreline, and brought 230 oil-
slicked birds and other wildlife to the Wabamun area
for rescue.
One hundred Wabamun Lake residents took part in a
five-hour blockade of the CN tracks in protest against
what they felt was insufficient action by the railway in
cleaning up the spill. The province of Alberta then
issued an environmental protection order to ensure
that the cleanup proceed.
It was not until four days after the derailment that CN
revealed that a "hazardous chemical" had spilled into
the lake in addition to the bunker C fuel oil. Residents
were told to stop cleaning wildlife and to completely
avoid all lake water and well water, even for watering
gardens and lawns. The 700,000 litres (154,000 Imp
gal/185,000 US gal) of Imperial Pole Treating Oil that
had escaped from a ruptured, derailed tank car
contained naphthalene and other polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons listed as "highly toxic" and suspected of
being carcinogens.
Further outrage and condemnation have come against
CN for not informing the community earlier of the
hazard before many people, including children, were
avoidably exposed. The provincial government is
weighing demands that it institute criminal charges
against CN officers for the delay."

CN knew the minute the train left the tracks, there was an environmental problem.
Yep, sounds alot safer to go by rail, when the fheads that run the railways don't tell anyone.
It is the " ... if a tree falls in the forest, does anyone hear it ... " attitude.

There is a new rail loading facility going into Hardesty
AB... the trains will be able to load unit trains of oil
cars nonstop... as in the complete train moves slowly
through the loading terminal...while loading the oil
onto the tank cars. Big money to be made... as the oil
can then go anywhere!
Here is the real reason rail will take off... new
producers are locked out in many cases:
“As common carriers, oil pipelines cannot allocate
capacity on a first-come, first-served basis, or to the
highest bidder. If more volumes are tendered than the
pipeline can accommodate, the pipeline must allocate
capacity in a non-discriminatory manner. Many
pipelines allocate pro rata based on the volumes
nominated. Some pipelines use, and FERC has
approved, historical shipments as a basis for the pro
rata allocation. i Under this method, a shipper’s
volumes over a specified period (3-12 months) form
the basis for rationing the capacity, and a small
amount of capacity, ranging from 3-15%, but typically
5% is reserved for “new” shippers to allow shippers to
build up historical volumes over time. FERC requires
that an oil pipeline’s prorationing method be included
in its tariffii” (IPAA, 2006)."
