    Seeding intentions!

Well the fricking snow isn't going so were going to have to start looking at changing up a few things as far as seeding goes.
Were white with very little ground showing and it snowed yesterday.
The forecast is very cool till now next Monday.
So here is what were doing.

    Durum 320 vs 1000
    Spring wheat 3000 still 3000
    Canola 4000 still 4000
    Barley 0 now 640
    Oats 640 now 320
    Peas 640 now 800
    Soy 320 now 240
Why drops in oats. They have killed the market and think that farmers will grow wall to wall oats for them so the price for fall is dropping.
Barley has issues in Europe. Winter barley and its still cold in late April. Hm late crop can have issues. Canada who is growing barley.
Durum just getting late for eastern Sask. Need to be seeded first to 6th of May that wont happen unless we go strait to summer.
Two things can change this, One the USA actually comes out and says we have had serious problem with frost and winter wheat has major issues.
Two the snow goes and its a spring as usual.

Our biggest change will be more beans and Canola less lentils. Cereals will stay the same, already had cut Durum out completely. Most of our low ground was destined for lentils but will likely be beans provided we can get them in by May 20th. Anything not seeded will go to Winter Wheat.

MB I agree with any thing not seeded going to winter wheat.
Ground that's not seeded one year due to flooding is total shit the next.
In east central were later seeding than some but try to get going first week of may mud or no mud.
But today is cold in the city and looks the same for another week.
No panic yet but this weather is getting sick.

No changes yet. Have no real plan b.
Been through this too many times now,
and I know plan b is often too dang
late. Might switch a bit here and there,
but doubtful. I only have so much cash
to buy so much seed, let alone having
several seed types in the bin that may
or may not get seeded for one thing.

One key, is that no one on the planet
has a clue about what will happen with
weather or markets. I have learned to
stop trying to play against, with, or
            backwards to the uncontrollables. It
            just does not work.

It is about a rotation too, not just
this years choices. There are herbicide
residues to watch for, weed resistance
to avoid, etc.. Second guessing nature,
and second guessing the markets is a
            lottery type of thing.

SF3, why cut Soy acres, they need to be planted later anyway?
Like mbratrud, we're also cutting out durum acres, made that call about three weeks ago when we didn't get the weather change that was forecast. Only 3rd time in a 100yrs for our farm, that we haven't planted durum.
We have extra peas here yet and will plant them for their shorter season.
Barley and oats can go to hell, along with the maltsters and millers.

Soy lost two quarters that were perfect for soy. Very little fert ever used and nice drained and need a little RR. The new China man went with a BTO who is known to not pay. I wish them luck.
Still might do the two quarters but the extra land we got this spring is good for Canola and HRS. Pig shit will get HRS this time round should be interesting.
