Not that there aren't any others, but what other
industry is as weather sensitive as Agriculture, who
controls the weather? If "they" don't want to protect
it, then let all the other parasites hanging on the ag-
tit starve too. How can you let the primary producer
fail without a domino affect. Who in their right mind
would take the risk we do? Even the guy renovating my
house knows this. No more EI, welfare, workman's comp,
healthcare, CPP and Old Age Security, Guaranteed Income
Supplement, food banks, soup kitchens....sink or swim--
your problem if you can't make it. If people think we
are guaranteed a living--have at it, buy some land and
start farming. If I had to rely on what government
provided I certainly wouldn't farm.
As far as machinery goes, so every other industry can
forge ahead with advances in technology and innovation
and farmers are supposed to "make due"? Treat it like
the business it is, we are not simple minded hayseeds.
The ones with a head on their shoulders and not up
their ass will survive and succeed.

This statement could use a little grammar polishing but
it speaks volumes....

Freewheat, I guess I'm not questioning your ability in math and other talents.
You spent the time figuring out your payment in the year you thought you might be getting one. Did you do the same in every year?
What I'm getting at is something like the following that happened to us:
When we filed out 2007 application, we sold almost all of out canola production at a price that was quite a bit higher than the year end inventory price provided by the program. The grain was on the farm till early Feb the following year but because we marketed almost all the production at a higher price, we were able to use that price. By doing this, it increased out margin for 2007 by over $150,000. 2007 is one of the years used in our 2010 reference margin calculation.
In 2008 and 2009 we did a large portion of wheat and barley through fixed price and basis contract pricing. Same as 2007, we beat the year end price by a faitly large amount which again made the margin for 2008 and 2009 higher verses if we simple used the standard codes and prices provided by the program.
Some of you may think its manipulating the program, but its simply getting the production revenue earned for the crop year in the right year.
By doing things like this, our reference margin is higher and more accrate. Our payment for 2010 was over $100,000 more because of doing so and was basically the main reason we received a benefit. We did not sell much of our 2009 canola crop in 2010 and chose to hold for better prices.
This price increase throughout the year is treated as income for the 2010 program year and was a reason why many farms didn't receive a very big payment.
Its tough to explain, hopefully this makes sense.
And as I mentioned before, my accountant earns his fees imo
