SK Wheat Development Commission and SK Barley Development Commission Announced at Farm Progress.

Barley Council welcomes new Saskatchewan commissions

The Barley Council of Canada (BCC) congratulates Saskatchewan farmers on the establishment of the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission and the Saskatchewan Barley Development Commission.

Today's announcement was made at the Farm Progress Show in Regina. Each commission will have the opportunity to guarantee Saskatchewan wheat and barley producers have the resources and leadership needed to stay competitive.

"Bringing Saskatchewan producers to the BCC board table makes organizations like ours much stronger," said Brian Otto, BCC Chairman. "I look forward to working with the Saskatchewan Barley Development Commission to help strengthen the Canadian barley industry."

Bill Cooper, Chair of the Saskatchewan Barley Development Commission, is currently representing the province at the BCC Board table. Otto added that, as the Barley Council of Canada Board is comprised of both farmers and industry, it is important to have strong farmer representation at the table.

The Council will be working closely with the newly formed barley commission on the advancement of barley in Saskatchewan and nationally.

Alberta barley farmers applaud grassroots leadership

Praise is rolling in from Alberta barley farmers as they congratulate their Saskatchewan counterparts on the establishment of new Wheat and Barley Development Commissions.

The announcement was made during the Farm Progress Show in Regina.
The two commissions will be producer-elected and directed, ensuring Saskatchewan wheat and barley farmers have the resources and leadership needed to stay competitive at all levels.

"The creation of Saskatchewan's wheat and barley commissions will substantially increase farmer input into the grain industry in that province," said Matt Sawyer, ABC chairman. "At the Alberta Barley Commission we are excited to collaborate with these new groups as we seek to find new ways to generate innovation in the barley and wheat industries."

Wheat and barley represent close to one-third of the annual crop acreage in Saskatchewan. The province also accounts for an average of 50 per cent of Western Canada's wheat (11.5 million acres) and 35 per cent of its barley (three million acres). The two commissions will be fully operational by the end of 2013.

The Alberta Barley Commission is a grassroots, not-for-profit organization directed, funded and controlled by the province's barley farmers. The Commission co-ordinates and sponsors research, market development, technology transfer and policy development on behalf of its producers.

      Wheat Growers support formation of
      Saskatchewan Commissions
      The Western Canadian Wheat Growers
      Association endorses today’s announcement
      regarding the formal establishment of
development commissions for wheat and barley in
      Saskatchewan.
“The formation of these Commissions will help
promote our wheat and barley in international
markets and here at home,” says Levi Wood,
President of the Wheat Growers. “It will also help
ensure we have ongoing farmer-directed research
into the production of these crops.”
For the past several months Wheat Grower
directors Cherilyn Nagel and Gerrid Gust have
been serving on the steering committee that has
been working to develop the mandate and
operational details of the Saskatchewan Wheat
      Development Commission (SWDC). Both have
been appointed by Agriculture Minister Lyle
Stewart to continue to serve on the interim board
of directors, with Cherilyn serving as interim
      Chairperson.
“We’re quite excited to reach this milestone,” says
Nagel. “Commissions have a good history of
success in this Province in helping to promote and
develop canola, pulse and many other crops. We
are determined to see the same success happen
      in wheat and barley.”
The Wheat Growers are expecting the
      Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission
to take a leading role in promoting Canadian
wheat and dispelling myths that have questioned
its nutritional benefits. We also see the
Commission as playing an important role in
agronomic research and working to maintain and
      improve access to international markets.
The Wheat Growers are also working to ensure
the Saskatchewan wheat and barley commissions
work hand in hand with existing wheat and barley
commissions in Alberta, and the Manitoba wheat
and barley association that is under development
      in Manitoba.

Absolutely fantastic. Just what we needed.
A few more farmer organizations; and more built in costs; and diretor's jobs too.

Of course the qualifications, gerrymandering etc. will be announced later.

Too bad there wasn't such good news every Friday....eh.

For those who object, do you ask for your canola
levies back? Is there a better way for production
agriculture farmers to have our voices heard?
Direct member associations are a tough sell.

It has been said that the difference between a countries dictator and democratic election is the relatively fixed two or 4 year period in the latter system.
But I remember that even during democratic reigns; the period of power was determined by a government hanging on for the last gasps of an extended term.
So it is rightly pointed out the voluntary organizations are hard sells. What new that could be done (if anything) considering the factors of apathy, lack of concensus, forward plans and whatever you know about normal farmer behavior.

Adding more organizations isn't any solution to the long list of current fractured farm organization; nor in the interests of efficiency and productivity.
That I do strongly suspect as a fact.

If it can't stand on its own merits without being mandatory, pretty much sums it up.

Much like an organization some of these people just spent years getting rid of.

Is that what is meant by ironic?

Just look at the names involved - its just an "old boys club" so to speak.

And before gust gets his panties in a knot, everyone knows this was a done deal before the comment period or they would have look for some fresh ideas or new people for the jobs.

They maybe would have spent some time lobbying Ritz and the provincial ag ministers to get it under one roof rather than saying "the rules say we need councils and commissions".

God gave these people brains, its beyond me why they don't use the ****ing things.

Well actually I do understand why they don't use their brains.

To change the thread a little. The provincial government uses an american firm to apply online for fishing and hunting licenses. The qualifier is your provincial health card and alot of info that in the past wasn't required. Now its online.

So you need a health card to get a HAL number.

Much like you need a commission to have a council.

Its redundant, but I see where the logic comes from.

They could have just used the health card number and issued a lifetime fishing license. Too easy.

I voted conservative but man there are some ****ing dummies running this place.

                          agreed bucket.
i cant for life of me figure out why this commission was formed. does not really affect me in Alberta but sure they will get some of my money some how. One thing that frustrates me is our over staffed over paid governments, federal and provincial. The other thing is the number of boards/commissions there are, like really? Sk pulse needed - yes. Alberta - no. Sask barley and wheat - dumbest thing i have heard in awhile.
If there was a vote in Saskatchewan, farmers only, on who thought this board was needed i would guess it would be pretty one sided. and not in favor of the only guy that comes on here and promotes his own interview. HAHAHA - like attention much?
