Fungicides on a late crop???

So I am a fungicide fellow, but in this cool, damp country, applying
them often delays maturity by a week or so. With a late crop of
wheat coming, should a guy still spray it to save yield that may
well freeze in the fall into 40 lb wheat?

I know in 2004, my unsprayed stuff fared much better than my sprayed
stuff that stayed green forever.

Its a difficult decision,here late wheat is often heavily infected with leaf diseases= poor yields. A week later maturity can equal frozen crop. Lots of crop is just emerging in this immediate area, hard to get excited about dropping $15/ac on fungicides on that crop.

Really I guess it comes to your risk tolerance. I
personally would be sick to my stomach if it didn't
freeze and lost 10 bushels across the board by
not spraying. ( and honesly more so even if it
froze),We are late too and I have the same
concern freewheel. But today the way the crop
looks we will chance it, but nothing against those
don't do the same.

1) stay away from strobi products
2) healthy green plants will mature from
the top down. I my opinion the maturity
delay is greatly overstated. And yes I
farm where frost matters, way up in nw
sk.

I don't notice any of our wheat maturing later using stuff like prosaro/caramba, or folicur.

Is there an actual study that someone can point to
that shows a significant delay in maturity?

This year I used half rate of generic tilt on wheat
and might spray Folicur later.

Have to confess that we haven't done much in the
way of fungicide application to cereals in the past
mainly due to our generally warm and dry climate
we normally experience in July /August here in
southwest/central sask. However with 9 inches of
rain in the last 30 days and the lush growth we
have in our durum crops I am strongly leaning
towards applying fungicide to at least a portion of
our cereal crop. Early durum is just entering flag
leaf and looks to have tremendous potential.
Curious to learn what others in this same climactic
zone have experienced in regards to net benefit of
a cereal fungicide app.
We have done fungicide apps to our pulses most
years and have had varying results with some
years such as last year producing no net benefit
at all after a hot/dry summer.

Don't be fooled by a ripe kernel in a
green crop. The straw is a week or so
later.

East of Quill to Kelvington the crops are looking great. Most are 10's, some spraying to do, weeds are big. We missed big rains, no water in our fields, opposite of 2012.
Last canola field will be sprayed tomorrow. Lots of potential.

I've never used fungicides but might try this year. Do you apply only if you see disease or do you apply preventatively if the crop looks good and conditions are favourable? Crop looks good but disease isn't noticeable yet and ready to spray within a week.

In 2009 I had a big infection of Tanspot
in Barley. For a reason I don't remember
only 300 acres got sprayed with Tilt.
Those acres ended up freezing and had low
germ. The unsprayed acres made it to
senescence quicker and graded malt.

It was only one year. But it can happen.
In the same situation would I spray now,

Wd9 you are right about the straw but my
experience has been that you end up
having to scout the kernal alot closer
for maturity. At the end of the day you
end up spraying the crop way greener.

In cereals you get way more bang for your
buck when you spray it on a crop that
doesn't have disease than you do spraying
it on a crop that does have a high
infection. Basically preventative
maintenance in key for fungicide to work
the best!

Add a foliar nutrient to the fungicide. It
will push the crop through and there wont
be any delay's from the fungicide. A good
foliar should run around the $6.00 mark.
Its up to you if you want to add the
additional cost. Make sure the Foliar has
N-P-K-S and micros especially copper in
it.
