No premium for high protein Durum

Most years there is a big premium for high protein Durum.
This year our Durum is 14-16% protein and there is no premium.
    At our local terminal.
If it's under 11.5% there is a discount. 11.5 and over the price is the same.

Thanks Riders. Last election I voted for the Green Party because the Conservative incumbant was a dick! Now he's President of Omnitrax.

But re Durum I heard some harvest reports from North Dakota that stated yields and quality of durum was excellent and that px premiums had eroded. So if there's an abundance what do you do? Store till next year? Suck it up and say that's all there is, just market reality?

There's no premium because everybody has high protein. Why would they pay for it?

No way I hold until next year with prices between $9-$10 now.

With $9 durum and $6 spring wheat what will get seeded next year? I knew a guy who used to seed durum at Melfort back in the 90 s so there is maybe 10 million acres that can switch for next year.

Durum at Melfort ??? Ya right... Might be good for 10 million acres but 4 million goes straight to feed market.. It is nearly impossible to grow a #1 Cwad in a dry hot summer in SW Sask let alone in the higher moisture black soil zones. As far as protein premiums will keep a good portion of 2015 high px production for blending purposes in the future. Might not be the exact right train of thought with prices at $9 plus, however have seen the benefit in a number of years when shortage of good protein. Spin the wheel where it stops nobody knows ...

Yes they were doing it in the 90's fairly consistently. Typically 2 or 3 but did get #1 once in 98 which was a dry year in that area.

With the agronomy practiced today you would have an unbelievable lodged flat crop.1990 is 25 years ago.

As I said this spring.Durum market is not amount seeded it is how much is harvested in good shape.Basically no carry over of good durum but North Dakota and Sask got a fair bit of good quality this year. With the last % not grading very well price should old it's own.
