??????? Land here is trading around 5 times what it was worth in the early 80's, some areas maybe more, some maybe less. I am not arguing the point but would like to know what has CN shares done (dividend included) since they were privatized.
Chart people????
It would be interesting to know.

They have split two for one on four occasions, 100 shares would equal 800 shares today. They started to trade on Nov 22, 1996 at $51.50. The value of a 100 share without dividends would be just under $60,000.00 on a $5150.00 investment.
Not sure that much invested in land would have brought you that type of return, unless it had a gold mine on it or lots of oil.

Isn't asking the government to force the privately owned railroads to do "more" exactly the same as telling the government to tell Canadian Tire to hire more mechanics?
Isn't that why 50 bucks was about all the penalties amounted to?
Isn't that why the RR's are hauling oil? Because they are free to make a good business decision because they are private?
Are they forced to haul cars of grain? What if one day they decided they didn't want to?

At one time CN shares had increased in Value 37 times since 1995. I expect there is a number now what would determine this but indeed MUCH better than anything else. Everytime they hit 100$ they split. Anyway..
Regarding what is the railways obligations to common carry, this is the question that governments wrestle. They are a private company with a public responsibility not unlike a utility but different... hence the millions of dollars in public investment over the years.

If you were lucky enough to have purchased $1,000
in CN shares during our IPO, those same shares
would be worth over $35,000 today – a remarkable
return on investment. Furthermore, CN has
increased its dividend 19 consecutive times since
1995 at an average compound annual growth rate
of 17 percent, and has created signifi cant value for
shareholders through regular share repurchases
since its fi rst buyback program in 2000.
CN has split its stock on four occasions since the IPO,
most recently with a two-for-one stock split in 2013.
FROM THE CN ANNUAL REPORT 2015..
