A few guys got rolling yesterday for the first time since Sept 4. I have nothing ready. Roundup working slow. Still have 50 acres of canola to cut, but I may have to leave it and hope to straight it. So wet. Guys are waiting more for fields to be firm enough, not so much for the grain to dry.

Today it is cloudy and misty. We have had showers every day for 4 days. Not much but enough to keep things damp. Soil is absolutely full and over full. water everywhere, slimy mud everywhere else. The forecast has never been more wrong. Cloudy and 14 today so far. was supposed to be a high of 26.

David Philips fault. He opened his big trap the other day stating we will be 10 degrees above normal for at least the next ten days, and that the fall will be very warm and pleasant.

    Thanks Dave!

Anyway, I am stuck at 10% done. Area probably about 20% done.

Another thing guys are having trouble with is the cereals that simply won't mature well. Do you swath it, or spray and wait at this time of year? Swath green oats and trust there will be a week of warm and dry, or spray it and hope the glyph takes effect soon?

To be perfectly honest, I am very, very stressed. And riders, I am not asking for sympathy, just telling my agriville family the truth. I am at my limit. If this is grain farming, I am ready to keep on building fences and wean myself off. When you have barley at 130 days, and it is still half green, something is not right, and the fun is gone. Even if I could combine, I am so bloody exhausted from walking to the tractor countless miles through the mire by 9 AM, that I would not be able to stay up and go into the night anyway. Yesterday, I was driving home to get the 4WD tractor at about 8 PM. I realized I could hardly concentrate on the road. Exhausted, and sitting at ten per cent. Again, not looking for sympathy, just fed up, tired, and to be frank, ready to quit. I feel like I have had enough of this business, I really do. I am too darn young to feel like I do, and it scares me.

Free wheat, that is a bug.. some parts dry, others being tortured. Some one tell Mother Nature, "it's harvest time".

Freewheat, I think you should get building fences. Sounds like you have an awesome grass growing environment.

The diversity of conditions in Western Canada seems to cover everything from one extreme to the other.

I may not be in the "garden spot" of the Prairies but learned to deal with the variability. Over my lifetime I would say we tend drier than wetter. Even in the "wet cycle" we never had it near as bad as the fellows not too far east of here.

Freewheat, maybe take a page from Grassfarmer's book. I think he's onto something. Cattle producers are getting scarce, they do things different than our forefathers and the prices are very good. Can always go back to crop production. Mow around the bluffs to keep them the original size in case you want to grain fsrm it again.

Hang in there. Hopefully there will be lots of nice harvest days in the next 6 weeks for you.

Hope things turn around for you freewheat.
If not I remember the Cuban Assassination dude saying he was going to get a bunch of bail out money and seemed like a guy who will grab any land any where to prompt his cause - you might have too call him - but set your price very high so you can get into more animals and grass . I am sure he has loads of cash because he keeps the rest of AG alive . Set the price high enough that you can walk away from the swamp land . I am sure he will get a bail out next year for being too wet 😅 cause he is a big farmer and has connections ..

Big exodus last few years in our area out of cattle.
Some of those who remain in cattle grow grain as a sideliine and for own feed.
Local land is variable, some hilly and well drained, other flat and harder to farm in wet years.
Do not see any trend yet back to grass and pasture land.
Seem to be getting farther and farther away from days of my youth when mixed cattle grain operations were most popular.

free wheat. slow down and take a breath. your not the first and wont be the last that the stars dont align for.thats just the way it is its not your fault. however after saying that you will be surprised how valuable a person of your experience can be to another farmer as an employee. less stress and money in the bank.works for some. good luck.

Somewhere between 40 and 50 I gained some serenity (maybe) from a feeling of being resigned to my fate. Steel is hard because its been thru the fire and felt the hammer... But, your physical and mental health is ultimately the best for your family. Good Luck.

As I said before. The one thing that got me through the 80s was cattle and a long term dream that someday it all will be worth it.

                      I like that Blackpowder!

Steel sharpens Steel! We learn what kind of steel we are made of... and learn to take the pounding of the forge hammer... then when the final edge formed... it can be as sharp as a razor... if we are patient! 2015 may just be that kind of year!

Well, one other thought while waxing eloquent. I was a man when I stopped proving it to myself.

I am not religious in any way but the first three lines of the serenity prayer can do alot for your constitution. Funny how my attitude has changed over the years...and no it hasn't gotten worse!!!

Crop report....DONE harvest except for afew low spots. Machinery dealer says to me its early too bad you didnt have more to harvest, there's time. I told him, ahhh I don't like farming that much.

Take care while out there, work smart and safe.
