Both Hillary and Premier Notley are against keystone. This is interesting, one study done in the US showed higher greenhouse gas emissions without the pipeline due to increased rail traffic. In Hillary's case she is worried about her falling polling numbers. Who is Notley pandering to? I think Joe Biden will beat Hillary but we are stuck with Notley for 4 years:-(.

Listened to Notely the other day...her reason was she wanted to refine here....can't disagree.
In the interview, she certainly knew how much oil meant to this province....time will tell.
Wished previous premiers had the vision and will give her credit for at least talking to the industry....

Refine it here then truck it to the big population centres?

Pretty sure its a logistical thing.

The take away here isn't that the DEMS think that it is safer or more environmentally sound to transfer product by rail rather than pipeline, because they don't. Rather, it is that their long term strategy is to not require it from us in the way we would like them too. The same day Hillary stated she opposed Keystone is the same day she stated huge investments in Solar energy ultimately becoming the main power source for American homes. No stint of Republican's in the white house will change this. It is the DEMS strategy to become as energy sufficient as possible. This is a hard reality for us in the west but it seems pretty clear that this is the direction. The price of oil will go back up but I think the game has change. Just my opinion.

It would seem to me if it made financial sense the refineries would have been built. What amuses me is that voters are dumb enough to believe government is smarter and can make a business work that the private sector can't. The smartest and most successful people are in the private sector where the money can be made.

Cotton, if TransCanada Pipelines can move liquefied natural gas throughout it's system I would think highly refined petroleum could also be transported via pipe. But I can't say I'd know...

Trans-Northern Pipelines Inc. (TNPI) operates APPL which has been shipping finished refined products for decades from Edmonton to Calgary. We rent the excess non industrial land and grain farm around many of the facilities on Strathcona Refinery Row.

Trans-Northern Pipelines Inc. (TNPI) operates eastern Canadian finished product pipe lines as well.

Trans-Northern Pipelines Inc. (TNPI) operates two pipeline systems in Canada. Both are underground and transport refined petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel fuel, aviation fuel and heating fuel.

We operate 850 kilometres of pipeline in Ontario-Quebec. The pipeline flows east to west, linking Montreal, Quebec and Oakville, Ontario and west to east between Nanticoke and Toronto, Ontario. There are also branch lines which connect Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, Montreal’s Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport, as well as Clarkson and Ottawa, Ontario.

This pipeline safely transports an average of 27,500m3 or approximately 172,900 barrels of refined fuel products daily.

The pipeline is regulated by the National Energy Board (NEB), the agency responsible for regulating pipeline activities in the interests of the Canadian public.

The Alberta Products Pipeline spans 320 kilometres and flows north to south, transporting products from refineries in the Edmonton area to distribution terminals in Calgary including the Calgary International Airport.

On average, the pipeline transports 7,700m3 or approximately 48,400 barrels of refined fuel products daily and is a main source of delivery for refined petroleum products in southern Alberta.

The Alberta Products Pipeline is regulated by the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), the agency responsible for regulating Alberta’s oil and gas resources.
