Both Hillary and Premier Notley are against keystone. This is interesting, one study done in the US showed higher greenhouse gas emissions without the pipeline due to increased rail traffic. In Hillary's case she is worried about her falling polling numbers. Who is Notley pandering to? I think Joe Biden will beat Hillary but we are stuck with Notley for 4 years:-(.

Listened to Notely the other day...her reason was she wanted to refine here....can't disagree.
In the interview, she certainly knew how much oil meant to this province....time will tell.
Wished previous premiers had the vision and will give her credit for at least talking to the industry....

The take away here isn't that the DEMS think that it is safer or more environmentally sound to transfer product by rail rather than pipeline, because they don't. Rather, it is that their long term strategy is to not require it from us in the way we would like them too. The same day Hillary stated she opposed Keystone is the same day she stated huge investments in Solar energy ultimately becoming the main power source for American homes. No stint of Republican's in the white house will change this. It is the DEMS strategy to become as energy sufficient as possible. This is a hard reality for us in the west but it seems pretty clear that this is the direction. The price of oil will go back up but I think the game has change. Just my opinion.

It would seem to me if it made financial sense the refineries would have been built. What amuses me is that voters are dumb enough to believe government is smarter and can make a business work that the private sector can't. The smartest and most successful people are in the private sector where the money can be made.

Cotton, if TransCanada Pipelines can move liquefied natural gas throughout it's system I would think highly refined petroleum could also be transported via pipe. But I can't say I'd know...

Trans-Northern Pipelines Inc. (TNPI) operates APPL which has been shipping finished refined products for decades from Edmonton to Calgary. We rent the excess non industrial land and grain farm around many of the facilities on Strathcona Refinery Row.
Trans-Northern Pipelines Inc. (TNPI) operates eastern Canadian finished product pipe lines as well.
Our Pipelines
Trans-Northern Pipelines Inc. (TNPI) operates two pipeline systems in Canada. Both are underground and transport refined petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel fuel, aviation fuel and heating fuel.
Ontario-Quebec Pipeline
Ontario Quebec Pipeline

We operate 850 kilometres of pipeline in Ontario-Quebec. The pipeline flows east to west, linking Montreal, Quebec and Oakville, Ontario and west to east between Nanticoke and Toronto, Ontario. There are also branch lines which connect Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, Montreal’s Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport, as well as Clarkson and Ottawa, Ontario.
This pipeline safely transports an average of 27,500m3 or approximately 172,900 barrels of refined fuel products daily.
The pipeline is regulated by the National Energy Board (NEB), the agency responsible for regulating pipeline activities in the interests of the Canadian public.

Alberta Pipeline
APPL Line

The Alberta Products Pipeline spans 320 kilometres and flows north to south, transporting products from refineries in the Edmonton area to distribution terminals in Calgary including the Calgary International Airport.
On average, the pipeline transports 7,700m3 or approximately 48,400 barrels of refined fuel products daily and is a main source of delivery for refined petroleum products in southern Alberta.
The Alberta Products Pipeline is regulated by the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), the agency responsible for regulating Alberta’s oil and gas resources.
Anything can be done... if folks work it through.

Same companies that Own refineries on the Gulf also are involved in oil sands. They could give a rats ass about job in Canada, they want a line built to Their refinery
Hewers of and drawers of water, No value added here boys we are conservative, get it put of the ground as fast as you can !!

Hamloc, most of the major projects in my time have come through government incentives and help and sometimes direction.
The tar sands was greatly subsidized, and their incentives caused some of the obscene wages and uncontrolled growth. Even when oil was above $60, Ralph gave more tax incentives when his buddy Peter Elzinga became a lobbyist for Suncor.
Alpac, Husky upgrader and many more had much to do with gov incentives...nad direction.
The packing plants also had major gov involvement when everything was concentrated in southern Alberta. And, IMO, signed a deal with the devil...not to be involved with any other packing plants. During BSE, there were many groups trying to initiate something to bring us out of the squishing thumb of Cargill and Lakeside Packers, but to no avail...and remember what the Feds dug up on how much money was being made.
Railways, power, telephone networks, all had gov involvement and some were initiated by the government of the day....only to be sold to the "smart business people" and not for the betterment of "the people"....only some!

All good examples of effective lobbyists and how governments are corrupt. Many examples all across Canada too many to list. I think it would be fantastic if we could build more refineries in Alberta how many years would it take to get one approved and then how many years to get a pipeline built to ship the product from the refinery? A great dream, the Premier is just kicking the can down the road to make it look like she is doing something. All she is going to do is amass a huge debt.

Just came across an article from 2004 when Fred Dunn, auditor general was looking into some of Ralph's gov....
"Although oilsands production increased by 74 per cent between 1995 and 2002, royalties from oilsands actually decreased by 30 per cent. Last year , Albertans only earned $200 million from oilsands, or nearly $800 million less than they did from video lottery terminals"
No wonder we have deficits like we do...so , I for one will give Notely a chance....don't think she can do worse.
