Believe they are definatley the lights. Thought they where possibly sun bouncing off clouds. Just had never seen it so far south. Not a star gazer maybe the old timers here have seen it?

From my vantage point. They are kind of dim white patches of light that are flashing, alternating from side to side at times and almost disappearing and re-appearing as well. Kinda neat.

Really, I see the northern lights all the time. One october after combining they were really intense and close. We were whistling at them, they dropped down really low, like near the ground about 400 yards away. That was very very creepy, we tucked tail and ran for the house!
Before the whistling I was (dismissively) telling old native folklore about the northen lights coming down and stealing children to my brother in law from England. We both got a pretty good scare that night! I have never seen that again, luckily I had a witness with me. We still talk about it to this day.

Still south of me and now stretching across the sky. No color in these like I sometimes see when they're in the northern sky.

Hell had nothing to do with it, but I'll defer to Tom and Freewheat on that.
Four Russian cruise missiles exploding off target is an answer, but the obvious one is that this was a predicted event of three nights, now over, with the middle night being too cloudy here to observe.
