    standing vs swathed canola

So how's it looking with the wind? My standing stuff doesn't look too bad vs swaths rolled away but all the swathed canola close around here is safe in the bin.

lots of standing is 80-90% shelled . they are combining at 2 mph , all they can go in it . other fields are so wet they cannot travel on them . it's a real mess . most swathed stuff has been in the bin for weeks . one neighbor is probably gonna lose his ass , small farmer , 1000 ac shelled real bad still standing , raining again . had started combining it at 1.5 mph small JD combine . one other guy was stuck so bad in standing canola that he had to get a backhoe in , just about wrecked combine gettin it out . swathed fields are dried and gettin annhydrosed now

Really nasty for standing canola yesterday... a day of rain and 60-70km/hr wind... is not kind.

Lack of frost has big green areas that will not cure down... most years all would be ready by now. Swathed Canola may not yield as much under perfect conditions... but having dry canola in the bin... that has 0 green and no wet chaff... can't be all bad! We did 380ac Saturday with 2 machines... swaths slid through very nicely... started when it was dry at 2:30 pm and went till rain started in the night .

I did a about 50/50 this year. Didn't have a problem with either system. Some standing was preharvest sprayed, some not. One field split trial, moisture was the same, swathed was marginally easier to harvest but we did it on the same day. We left out a few standing acres and I expect 10% shelled from the wind. In the future, I think I'll keep the swather parked unless it is a thin stand or very weedy.

Feel bad for the guys in our area with standing canola.
Swathed stuff been in the bin for 2 weeks. Standing stuff out yet and shelling in the wind. Green straw.
No difference in yield until now. The standing stuff will yield far less now.
Not a fit for our area. I don't believe it ever will be.
            Won't be trying it again.

The only thing I didn't like about the standing was the sprayer tracks. We didn't use dividers for fear of tearing them off and had trouble picking up the plants knocked down by the tires. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Our best success was to combine in the opposite direction which almost worked with autosteer and a 30 foot header and 90 foot sprayer.

Also our non sprayed standing did get a couple of -5 frosts which I think was very helpful to harvestability.

If you plan on straight cutting next year, talk to your seed supplier or neighbours. Some varieties work better than others.

Our experience was a tale of 2 fields. We sailed through the first field at 3.7-3.9 mph. Yield 46 with dry stems and no shelling.

The next field was a struggle to get up to 2 mph. Hard to put a full width header through. Yield 60 with green mushy stems coming out of the chopper like out of a forage harvester.

Both fields sprayed with Heat and glyphosate the same day. The last field had part done with just Heat and there was no difference better or worse.

The last ( problem) field had different fertility as the previous tenant had fall applied 250 lbs/acre N via hog manure before the landowner turfed him. It just refused to die.

My experience this year suggests that straight cut is ideal for the middle third of the crop. It's nice to swath the early stuff and get it in the bin quick. The late stuff takes forever to mature standing. If sprayed with heat too early it will actually slow maturity.

We were on the last field of straight cut canola yesterday. 70 acres left L261. It definitely goes through the combine the easiest.

We dessicated half and thr other half cured naturally. Only shelling so far is where the moose crossed from one bluff to the other.

We only had wind for 2 hours and got rain first here though... wet pods won't shell.

The liberties are definitely more shatter prone though but go through way easier.

We did have all our canola in the ground by end of May... and excellent stands on all fields.

3.5 to 4 mph through all of it standing... wouldn't want to do it with a small or old combine though it does take hp. The Claas is perfectly suited to it.

Next year we will dessicate all of it though... not for thr canols but to get rid of all thr green shit between the rows... instead of spraying after

Swathed, by Aug 25, combined by Sept 24, NO blown swaths, no hail , no shatter, all dry , very easy to combine, easy to see the wet spots, under 1% dkg. Keeping it simple, NO $$ straight header, big new swather, best job on the farm, Thankful for fearing change.
