Braveheart: Grain companies charged the maximum tariffs because that was the only way they could make money on CWB grain handle. Now we have no way of knowing for sure how much they are making as there is no transparency on what they are selling grain for or what their true costs are. We do not have a functioning Canadian futures market and there is really no true local cash price so we honestly cannot compute a true basis. Basis has become simply a signal to deliver, nothing more and cannot be compared to tariffs which had maximum levels set to protect farmers.

Come on, you really think the grain companies are not charging the maximum tariffs which they set, in their current basis. Your argument that when there was a CWB, the grain companies ONLY then charged their maximum tarfitts is completely baseless!!!

My recollection of charges(all in transparent)pre-open market for my area was about $1.65 a bushel for wheat. We are still responsible for everything but maybe sometimes more or sometimes less depending on "their" needs. That was enough to start with.
