Two young girls and almost a third suffocated in truck load of canola.

Pretty sad but non of that sounds right. If it was flax yes. Or am i wrong?or the whole story hasn't come out. Wouldn't have brought it up but made the mistake of reading a bunch of online comments made by city folk and people who pretty much think they know something about farming because they spent a few hours on their uncles farm.

Two girls are dead and one is in critical condition following an incident on a rural property in central Alberta on Tuesday evening.

According to RCMP, the three girls between the ages of 11 and 13 were playing in the back of a truck loaded with canola near Withrow, Alberta, when they were buried and smothered by the seed.

Those at the scene worked frantically to pull the girls from the truck before emergency personnel from both Eckville and Rocky Mountain House soon arrived.

Two girls, aged 11 and 13, were pronounced dead at the scene. A third, aged 11, was transported to Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton by STARS air ambulance in critical condition.

The RCMP is investigating the incident.

Withrow is about 30 kilometres east of Rocky Mountain House.

How can this happen. How is anyone letting kids "play" near moving grain. If they're farm kids, how are they not aware of the dangers of grain, especially at the ages 11-13. If they're not farm kids, where was the supervision? Sad to think about all the pain this family will have to go through.

I think I'll have a panic attack is if someone says a kid can sink in canola. Christ i bet a combine dumped on them.

Was this a Colony by chance? Not saying they don't love their kids, it's just sometimes there are distractions and so many people to keep track of. Tragic.

The only thing mandatory needed on farms... is Common Sense.

Oh OH... I forgot... there is no such thing according to University Profs... Left Wing environmentalists or communists!

The Moms on colonies are very protective of the little ones... would be very surprised Braveheart if that were the issue here.

Here is the report:

A third girl has died after she and her two sisters were buried by canola seed while playing in the back of a truck in central Alberta last night.

According to RCMP, the girls were buried and smothered by the seed at a family farm near Withrow. They had been on the back of a grain truck.

"The girls were with their parents, and while the truck was being unloaded they somehow fell into the canola seed," said Ivan Dijkstra, deputy fire chief with Clearwater Regional Fire Rescue Service.

Adults at the scene pulled the girls out. Emergency responders tried to resuscitate the girls using CPR and oxygen therapy for two hours but the 13-year-old and one of the 11-year-old twins died at the scene.

"Canola seed is a very small grain and it gets into your lungs and stops the oxygen transfer," Dijkstra said.

The third injured sister was taken to Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton where she later died.

RCMP and the superintendent of the Wildrose School Division are scheduled to update the media in nearby Rocky Mountain House at 11:15 a.m. MT.

I've been thinking about the family all morning, makes me sick. Take this as a opportunity to remind your kids about farm safety, things like this shouldn't happen.
