    Another accident

Two young girls and almost a third suffocated in truck load of canola.

Pretty sad but non of that sounds right. If it was flax yes. Or am i wrong?or the whole story hasn't come out. Wouldn't have brought it up but made the mistake of reading a bunch of online comments made by city folk and people who pretty much think they know something about farming because they spent a few hours on their uncles farm.

Canola seed smothers 2 girls, critically injures another near Withrow
Adults pulled children from back of truck but too late for resuscitation
CBC News Posted: Oct 13, 2015 10:46 PM MT Last Updated: Oct 14, 2015 5:57 AM MT

Two girls are dead and one is in critical condition following an incident on a rural property in central Alberta on Tuesday evening.

According to RCMP, the three girls between the ages of 11 and 13 were playing in the back of a truck loaded with canola near Withrow, Alberta, when they were buried and smothered by the seed.

Those at the scene worked frantically to pull the girls from the truck before emergency personnel from both Eckville and Rocky Mountain House soon arrived.

Two girls, aged 11 and 13, were pronounced dead at the scene. A third, aged 11, was transported to Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton by STARS air ambulance in critical condition.

The RCMP is investigating the incident.

Withrow is about 30 kilometres east of Rocky Mountain House.

How can this happen. How is anyone letting kids "play" near moving grain. If they're farm kids, how are they not aware of the dangers of grain, especially at the ages 11-13. If they're not farm kids, where was the supervision? Sad to think about all the pain this family will have to go through.

Was this a Colony by chance? Not saying they don't love their kids, it's just sometimes there are distractions and so many people to keep track of. Tragic.

              OHS and WCB... mandatory?

The only thing mandatory needed on farms... is Common Sense.

Oh OH... I forgot... there is no such thing according to University Profs... Left Wing environmentalists or communists!

The Moms on colonies are very protective of the little ones... would be very surprised Braveheart if that were the issue here.

                  Here is the report:

A third girl has died after she and her two sisters were buried by canola seed while playing in the back of a truck in central Alberta last night.

According to RCMP, the girls were buried and smothered by the seed at a family farm near Withrow. They had been on the back of a grain truck.

"The girls were with their parents, and while the truck was being unloaded they somehow fell into the canola seed," said Ivan Dijkstra, deputy fire chief with Clearwater Regional Fire Rescue Service.

Adults at the scene pulled the girls out. Emergency responders tried to resuscitate the girls using CPR and oxygen therapy for two hours but the 13-year-old and one of the 11-year-old twins died at the scene.

"Canola seed is a very small grain and it gets into your lungs and stops the oxygen transfer," Dijkstra said.

The third injured sister was taken to Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton where she later died.

RCMP and the superintendent of the Wildrose School Division are scheduled to update the media in nearby Rocky Mountain House at 11:15 a.m. MT.

                  WOW.

I'm betting a cart got dumped on top of them. Horrible way to go, poor girls.

I've been thinking about the family all morning, makes me sick. Take this as a opportunity to remind your kids about farm safety, things like this shouldn't happen.

                      This in the comment section:

                      Just terrible.

Farming is the most dangerous profession in Canada -Alberta is the ONLY province which does not have Work-Safe protections and regulations!

We can tell where this is headed. Thousands get run over in towns and cities and what do we do? REGULATE all ALBERTA farms. They need more rules and regulations. I am just a stupid farmer... who can't market grain... or look after the most precious lives we are here to protect. Totally helpless and innocent.

And how many helpless and innocent babies... do we abort each year in North America???

                      God have mercy on us.

                          Pour...

This is very political... I did not mention any political party whatsoever. Are you?

Rules don't protect people in split second accidents... no matter where they happen.

Are you going to say NO CHILDREN allowed on farms?

That would be the only way to stop this kind of accident. AND this happened to Adults too.

It is VERY sad when people die.

People shouldn't use drugs, booze, abuse family abort babies... or blow each other up. All are political issues... RIGHT.

                            From the same discussion:

                            Tom Aaron
I had a 6 year old cousin die from similar circumstances on our farm. It was a pile of sand we were digging in. It collapsed and suffocated him. All this on a warm Sunday afternoon while our mothers were just a few feet away completely unaware. Although over 50 years have passed, the most tragic collective memory we have.

                            Be safe.

I find it ironic that when at trade shows etc kids are encouraged to play in canola. Big tubs set out complete with toys.
But when they are offered seed sample to take hime to grow and learn about agriculture and actual crp reproduction, the seed companies stop them.

My thoghts are with everyone in this and other tragic cases.
Lord know "But for the grace of God, there goes I"
