High times ahead for Canadian rails

"Canada’s three major railways should benefit from the Oct. 19, 2015 sea-to-sea election sweep by Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party of Canada. Trudeau’s party even managed to get four members of parliament elected in Alberta's two metropolises, Calgary and Edmonton—the ideological and financial anchors of the defeated Stephen Harper’s pro-pipeline and anti-rail Conservative government. Canadian voters issued the final death warrant for the ailing Keystone XL trans-border pipeline project, for which Harper was the last surviving cheerleader, having spent millions of taxpayer dollars promoting the private-sector scheme. The election of a greener government determined to redeem Canada from its reputation as an environmental pariah means a screeching halt to expansion of Alberta’s northern tar sands. New pipeline capacity is decades away because the Liberal government has promised to restore credible social and environmental assessment processes before new energy projects will be considered. That means CN and Canadian Pacific will continue to haul their existing shares of tar sands output to U.S. markets (assuming shippers find a way to avoid diluting the bitumen with extremely explosive naphtha). Any additional tar sands production from capacity expansions too far along to stop will also be shipped by rail."

"‘Just leave us alone,’ CEO of Canadian Pacific Railway tells Trudeau - The head of Canada’s second-largest railway urged the country’s incoming Liberal government to stop what is says is Ottawa’s history of meddling in its operations. Canadian Pacific Railway CEO Hunter Harrison said the Conservatives and prior Liberal governments haven’t done much in the past to help the railway. “Just leave us alone, give us a level playing field and let us run our business,” Harrison said Tuesday during a conference call about its third-quarter results a day after Justin Tru-deau led the Liberals to a majority government. The Calgary-based company and its larger rival, Canadian National Railway (TSX:CNR), were highly critical of the Tories for imposing fines and setting minimum grain volume require-ments last year following backlogs in moving a bumper grain crop. Harrison said he hopes the new government won’t again regulate Western grains. “I think they’ve got larger issues than to worry about than rails in Canada,” he said, adding that the country has been best rail system in the world. Canadian Pacific (TSX:CP) beat analyst expec-tations as it posted stronger adjusted profits by continuing to control costs while facing weaker volumes. CP’s ad-justed profits were $427 million or $2.69 per share, which was up 16 per cent from the same time last year and two cents above an estimate compiled by Thomson Reuters. Revenues rose to $1.709 billion in the three months ended Sept. 30, up two per cent from the third quarter of 2014. Analysts had estimated $2.67 per share of adjusted earn-ings and $1.686 billion of revenue. Net income decreased 19 per cent to $323 million or $2.04 per diluted share – mainly because of the impact of foreign exchange fluctuations on the value of the debt it owes. The company said it plans to cut up to $400 million in capital spending next year and will extend its holiday from buying locomotives a few more years until at least 2018."

This article just makes me plain mad and sick. Other than bad weather there is nothing that more negatively and directly affects the bottom line of farming than poor rail transportation. Farmers and retired grain company people will tell you it's the worst part of the grain business, the uncertainty of being able to ship contracts.
If there is a devil like character on earth it is Hunter Harrisison. The man is a classic greedy, no emotion arrogant self centered money grub
American, the worst of the worst. He couldn't care less about our grain if it moves on time, just his business, and because it's a monopoly and he can dictate price and time. He terrorized emoloyees at CN, pissed all over customers all for the mighty CN RAIL. Canceled a twinning of the rails from Edson to Thunder Bay and even had the nerve to tear out 50 miles already laid. Talk to any CN employee and they will tell you how bad IT was. They finally pushed him out to retire where he went back to Tennessee to breed horses on his stud farm. Knowing his personality, I am sure he did the breeding himself. Then another money grub New York Ackman called him out of retirement to terrorize CP rail and get the stock price up. Here is my word to the CEO of CP.....how about you CP give me the Railcars I want when I want and move them promptly to my customers and provide reliable service....or get out of my way and we as farmers will run our own trains down your lines or better yet get Trudeau 2 to nationalize the railway and you go back to your hick town and horse barn. I own the stock of both railways and what I have made dosent come close to what it has cost my farm these idiots we let run out Canadian corporations. Comments?

I am a conservative and I can say they did nothing for the farmers on rail service issues other than to get them moving in 2014 after we sat for 12 weeks shipping nothing while the CP/CN ran oil up and down the tracks. I do not know one fine that was levied or paid and $100K per day was a joke. The CEO of both railways carry that in their wallet.
I am a free enterprise person, but if there is one business in this country that needs goverment involvement IT is the two railways.....it is just sick what we have put up with. I would love to see the railway nationalized or at the very least have open running rights. THAT IS WHAT I CALL A LEVEL PLAYIG FIELD. Chop chop lets go Justin. Go home Hunter.!!

Open running, let US RR's work in Canada, and if that does not tune the bastards in, yes nationalize them both into one, service at cost for the good of the country! Our distances are the LONGEST on earth to port, we are held hostage by f*cking shareholders! Major change required.

Good comment diffusing the "own them" arguement.

What increase in stock value and/or dividend payment would you have to receive to offset what lack of service and/or lack of any real competition cost you.....

Oh, by the way, don't ask Gerry Ritz.

Richard Gray's report on the THE
              ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF ELEVATED EXPORT
              BASIS LEVELS ON WESTERN CANADIAN
              GRAIN PRODUCERS 2012/13, 2013/14 AND
2014/15 is at the following link:

              http://www.saskwheatcommission.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/The-Economic-Impacts-Of-Elevated-Export-Basis-Levels-On-Western-Canadian-Grain-Producers-2012-2015.pdf

Gray quantifies the cost of poor rail service to Western farmers and the losses are staggering!

Railway transportation is too important in this very large country to be left to the marketplace alone as poor service affect so many industries.

Either regulate good service, offer true competition through joint running rights, or nationalize the railways.

Unfortunately there are still farmers and organizations who think the market should allocate railway resources. It hasn't worked and it won't work to get the job done.

Farmers need to unite around this issue and get something done.

Let's wait for the CTA review report before giving advice to our new government.
Government regulation and ownership of railways goes far beyond affecting just grain producers.
Disgruntlement over wheat board fate still comes into efforts to influence government to support more capacity in our grain shipping system.

Bigger locomotives and longer trains should have reduced the cost to haul as did the fewer points to service.

Eventually someone is going to say they can do it better cheaper and faster.

Global warming ... Cold record cold winters...

Efficient movement of freight...Basis on Oil/potash/Fert... locked in continental interior... not JUST GRAIN...

Allocation of limited transportation resources... Capital deployment to increase efficiency...

THIS IS not a ONE TRICK SHOW.

MINISTER RITZ... had a very difficult problem. Minister Ritz in fact... did a good job considering ALL the problems that were at HAND. As Did PM Harper.

BNSF is a good comparison... to back up my claim.

Politics is NOT fair... nor do people care... people are short sighted... and the policies of Minister Ritz and PM Harper... were applied for the best result of a bad situation.

God Bless these two people... for the knives are certainly sharp... and the blood on the ground is RED.. NOT actually deserved... and Certainly not in the best long term interests of Canada.

                    One consolation.

MP Goodale... knows/understands all these things I have just said. MP Goodale is 'defacto' PM of Canada.

For this... I MYSELF am grateful.

Bless you Minister Goodale... may God grant you the wisdom to do the what could be called ' the impossible'... and may you provide the leadership to build a better Canada!!!

All the Best to everyone who gave so much... and got a 'knife in the back' for serving Canada for the best with long term perspectives for prosperity.... principled direction...

We know 'politics' interfered ... politics always interferes... AND MUST BE EXPECTED in all forms of governance... especially a Democracy.

Time to go see just how tough that harvested canola was... at 11pm last night!

                    Cheers!

Well, short sighted people..even some of his own were lamenting today, how the top down dictatorship didn't sit well with them...Democracy..??
(But I will also admit, it is happening more and more...that is why I don't like political parties...)

Some good those mps are when they can only speak out once harper is gone.

Speaks volumes as to what was wrong.

And for everyone that now says something - they should be disqualified for being in the race for leadership of the party.
They should have spoken sooner if they were leadership material.
