Like the idea of tillage radish but am not convinced of their fit in western Canada. If you want tubers you can't seed before mid July, leave it much later and you risk being frost killed in a normal year before you get much growth. Maybe better in S Manitoba than Alberta? we tried them in AB and were disappointed.
I don't see where they would fit well into typical cropping patterns/timescales here. Good for soaking up any N left in the soil but if there isn't much N there you wont get a crop either.

They seem to work well in the US ariel applied into grain corn crops to soak up and hold that N over winter.

We are swath-grazing half the cows on millet just now. Looks like crap but the cattle are doing well and clean up is excellent - can hardly see where the rows were. Wasn't expecting to be swath-grazing in mud in November!

I seeded mine mid June with the oats.

The oats and radish didn't germinate till mid July.

I wanted them to loosen up some hard soil from 3 years of rain. I thought if they got into the muck below they would take off.

A few did but it was a bit of a disappointment.

But I would try again.

Some went to seed. Interesting plant.

Grassfarmer, Bucket, my American neighbours, just 7 miles south aerial on tillage radish in early July. I can't pull tubers now. The tops are 3"" across on average. The sick part is they get assistance on the seeding cost.

Southern NB is suited to tillage radish and other cover crops. The main limitation I see for radish is our late flush of flea beetles.

I'm interested for these reasons: 1. I like the ground covered and believe cover crops suck more moisture out than tillage. Now when we did summerfallow it stored water rather than get rid of it. 2. We have cows and I see cover crops as that extended grazing system with benefits. 3. I'd really like to pull up nutrients we paid for that are stranded out of the root zone.

Bucket you got lucky - if they had germinated mid June they would all have gone to seed and no tubers formed. You need to seed them later to get the root formation you are after. They also can't take 30C heat at the cotyledon stage so again not a great fit depending on seeding date. The fact they can't be seeded with regular spring crops, or June seeded swath grazing crops is what makes them a difficult fit up here.

I had some big ones, dug them out to at least 10 inches and the roots broke off.


Sure would like to have some success with them.

Correction to above is that my American friends have to broadcast now. Now there are wind towers that prevent aerial seeding.

Grassfarmer, we used to swath graze Golden German Millet. Loved it as did the cows. We quit because of weed pressure. It just didn't work in the mud either We'd wait till freeze up.
