I am sure that WC and OH&S oversite will probably have some people a little more safety conscious, and that will be a good thing. However I think that the perception that this is going to have a significant effect on the number of farm accidents and fatalities is flawed. Few farm operators intentionally put people at risk. Accidents are caused by ignorance and complacency and safety education only puts a dent in the ignorance part of the equation. I also take offense at the implication that it is mostly abused farm employees who are victims and that they have not had any recourse. My understanding is that it is owners and their families who make up the largest segment of accident victims.

The family suffocating had Nothing to do with WCB... As they were Not working on the farm.
Nor did change required to take WCB... As many farmers had/have private insurance that covers that issue.
This was political not to stop accidents.
Safe family and Farmers are a mind set... Not a law created by ND political correctness.
No one ever said farmers who do the right things would be treated fairly or will be in the future.
Common Sense is a state of mind... Just like farms and farmers who stop millions of accidents before they happen.

Information on proposed WCB in Alberta can be found at
http://www.wcb.ab.ca/employers/farm_owners.asp
Information on town hall meetings for farmers and ranchers in Alberta to attend and learn about the proposed legislation can be found at
http://albertacanola.com/news/important-information-regarding-your-farm-and-workplace-legislation/
Space is limited at the town hall meetings so pre-registration is important. All growers are encouraged to attend.

I already pay wcb if we hire an employee, The question now is about your kids and casual labor that comes and processes cows for a day. Not sure how that is going to work. Gone are the days of neighbors helping out for an hour? I guess neighbor custom combining for a day or two, make sure he has coverage for himself? What if its his kid driving the combine? interesting.
