    NDPST!?

The more I think about the new proposed carbon tax the more questions I have. First off, is it really a pst in disguise at 3 billion dollars of revenue probably about the same as a 3 or 4 % PST!

Then I was thinking why is industry so happy. Well the oil sands emitt 70 megatons of CO2, the cap has been put at 100 megatons, an increase of 43%. It looks to me like our coal fired electricity industry is being shut down so our oil industry can grow and the average Albertan has to pay for it. In my case my farm uses about 40000 liters of fuel per year in 2017 that will cost me 1880 dollars and in 2018 it will cost me 2840 dollars just on fuel. That is with a carbon price of $20 and $30 a ton respectively. By 2030 the carbon price is supposed to be $100 a ton imagine what it will cost then, has this occurred to no one??

Now let's look at electricity, Transalta is on side. Why is that they must be going to lose Monet shutting down coal plants before their time. Or are they happy because they know they will be able to raise power rates at will. 1 windmill produces 1.8 megawatts when the wind blows, to replace 1 800 megawatt generator will take over 440 windmills at over 2 million a piece. Then power line infrastructure has to be built to connect these to the grid. And you need natural gas generation for power when the wind doesn't blow. Billions and billions of dollars. Oh I forgot that carbon tax we are paying will subsidize all this plus higher electrical rates.

One other possibility is it income redistribution they are after? 60% of Albertans will be eligible for rebates so low income Albertans will get it all back. Premier Notley suggested low income earners could make money with rebates if they became more energy efficient! So let's all freeze in the dark and live off the rebates!!

The question is, is this a blueprint for the rest of Canada? What will JT do? All I know is in Alberta we are f# ked!!!

Interesting little blurb comparing Notley to LBJ.
Weve been ignoring the other side in these green discussions too long, regardless of whos right scientifically.

Wealth redistribution tax??? Absolutely. And the middle class will pay it with no rebates. Ag might get rebates if we lobby.
Feel rightious. Youre doing your part to save the 4.5 billion year old planet.

There is probably no good reason why that province should be taxed higher than it was previously. Should have put more in the bank.

When did I say Tax Freedom Day was? My goodness how much more do they expect taxpayers to fork over?

According to the Fraser Institute for 2015:

        May 19 for Alta
        June 6 for Sask
        June 11 for Man

I guess Alberta can afford to give up about 3 weeks compared to the other prairie provinces...

Yes this is an Ontario style debacle. 30 years from now Canuckistan will have the same standard of living as the Ukraine or Kenya does now. Look at Greece were living standards are falling daily. That is where this will all end. Would be better is they simply introduced a sales tax like SK has now rather than disguising it as a carbon tax which hits one industry disproportionaly.

As far has the cost of utilities and gas, it is all based on what the average consumer can afford. Remember ten years or so the rumor had it natural gas would cost the average saskatchewan resident about 800 a month? Never happened, never will. Do you realize in this province natural gas is almost a must, and the average person, could never afford it. I do think, we have to make a change, just glad enough unless a pill comes out to guarantee you to live past a hundred i probably wont see the DRASTIC changes. If it does happen sooner, for some sacrificing the luxuries, holidaying, and living a below average lifestyle of what there accustomed to will be suicidal. Guys like freewheat and others like him will adjust just fine.

Totally agrees about it being a tax scheme but with the trading of credits how much is going to private sector?i dont know a heck a lot about it but like Sf3 says follow the money.

The agriculture, construction, logging industries will pay the highest amount.
(Unless there is a rebate for these industries.....maybe the Alberta farm group should be lobbying?)

The oil companies agreed to this because an emissions cap was the lesser of two evils vs a production cap. The carbon tax will also be a subsidy to them for investing in more efficient oil extracting technology.

Rural areas will be hardest hit vs urban as well where travelling to hockey, other sports is required.

Isn't it strange that most unionized NDP supporters live in Edmonton or in urban areas where fuel, natural gas and electricity isn't used as much as rural.

The NDP has created a PST that will be paid for mainly by non-NDP voters, not very surprising.

Any talk of ag credits for the crops we grow or the sinks that are our pastures and farmland. Don't give up on this.

If this "tax grab" goes through, and I'm sure it will, I will "divorce" my self from the NDP completely. Saving the planet will not happen with this plan and I doubt that the Liberal Party plans will either.

I rather like this "Global Warming" trend and remember the '40's and '50's when our winters were far worse than those of late. If CO2 has increased to change things...keep it up...mother nature usually evens things out after a bit. I won't be around for long, and a bit of warming is good for my old bones.

Oliver 88 absolutely correct farmers do not vote NDP for the most part neither do most self employed construction and oil workers. This tax will affect them disproportionately so yes a pst for non supporters.

Hamloc- This reminds me of how the education tax used to be disproportionately covered by farmland owners.

Good luck in Alberta, I hope your farm group can lobby to have this not applied to farm diesel!

It appears there is a petition to stop the carbon tax in Alberta.
