Because the Universities and chemical companies say you can't farm like that, it's backward.

          Black is back.

          1. Burn in spring
          2. Work in fall.
          3. burn and then work before seeding in spring.

Black is back boys and girls.

Follow the money. Universities love chemical companies money. I was explained this by a university professor with respect to CWB money. It's like priming the pump.

In 2009 went to Winnipeg in April to pick up a truck. All the fields from Gladstone to Winni were worked. My buddy and I looked at each other and asked if these guys ever heard about zero till. Stopped and talked to a Portage farmer and asked the same question. His answer, he laughed don't work in the fall...don't seed in the spring. Bought a new 60 foot culti the next year and a 45 foot tandem disc the next....haven't looked back. Saved me every year since. I too have also discovered eddy lights work well too in 150 bpa oat stubble.

Translation....Everything seeded the first of May was frozen three times by the first of June. Tillage works to warm up and dry up the ground.

No such thing as zero till east of portage la prairie as stated. There is a huge rush in the rrv following harvest to work the land. Start with one heavy harow pass, then cultivate. Let the land sit for one month, then fertilize or cultivate again, then light vertical till, then harrow once or twice. If there is time, pull out the sc****rs and clean out all field drains. Only way to farm here. Zero till could only work on soybean or flax land, assuming there are no harvest ruts to deal with. Tillage works takes more time than harvest in these parts.
