    Bill c6

Sorry for beating the dead horse. Got a strange thought that has not left my head for a few days and i don't spend much time thinking about farming anymore. For you guys that do.

Is it possible the underlying theme takin to the end of the mean, means an actual greater power in large corprate farms?kind of have to extrapolate a bit, please no knee jerk responces.

Burl Ives once had a song "watch the Donut not the hole"

Clearly people out protesting in Alberta are totally focused on the hole. Are you guys on the same planet bringing tractors and combines out to protest this?

We have had similar legislation in Manitoba for years that requires farmers to have Workman's Compensation for their employees. There are no dire consequences happening here.

In fact it is a benefit for farmers to have their employees covered by the WCB. Farmers could be sued for millions if someone was injured or maimed for life.

A prominent Manitoba Manitoba MP was being helped when putting up some hay by a friend of his who worked at the Canadian Grain Commission. The friend fell off the hay wagon and broke his back ending up in a wheel chair. I'm not sure how that worked out but I know the MP felt terrible about it. Having comp for someone who gets hurt pitching in on a farm would be a huge relief if someone were seriously injured.

Manitoba does not require family members to be covered by Workman s Compensation neither will Alberta.

Farmers should have there family members covered by WCB both for their kids and casual employees even if they are just helping out. The process is simple and not costly. In Manitoba as in Alberta "THIS IS VOLUNTARY"

So for those Albertans and the Wild Rosy Party here is Burl Ives song

          IFarmer;

"The process is simple and not costly. In Manitoba as in Alberta "THIS IS VOLUNTARY"

          I call your bluff.

In MB NOW... if you do not /LIE/cheat... you SHOULD/MUST be paying on the fair market value of the labour provided... whether or not that labour is paid or voluntary... it MUST have WCB premiums submitted. Does not mater who or when they work.

This MANDATORY REQUIREMENT also will be the case as of January 1 2016... For Alberta Farmers/Farm Families...if Bill 6 is passed before Christmas making WCB on Alberta Farms WCB Mandatory.

On our farm... we DO cover family and Friends who work with us; with WCB... VOLUNTARILY paying WCB in Alberta...right now...for market value of labour...

as REQUIRED by WCB rules in Alberta.

for those farms who have taken WCB insurance voluntarily in Alberta... just as we on our farm have been doing for 35 years... again this IS the Law... WE MUST insure and pay.

            BTW,

NOW...If WCB thinks farmers are cheating... and NOT submitting Insurance premiums properly... the do aggressively audit in Alberta... and it is not fun.

I can only speculate on what it will be like... once WCB has the BIG HAMMER... a Monopoly a tax collecting attitude that they will balance the Alberta Budget on the backs of farmers!

WCB is the least of the concerns as the bill6 legislation extends well beyond that. I prefer it remain optional, or possibly mandatory for non arms length employees, or similar private insurance product.

I think if they do move to full implementation of the changes they propose it will further promote rationalizing of farm production and land to larger corporate farms that can manage the overhead and inefficiencies that will result from the legislation and regulation.

This will fly in the face of what you think a socialist government would want to accomplish. Many older farmers and small farmers will pack it in. So cotton you are not far off what many of us think will transpire.

By the way the ag minister came out today saying hutterites would be exempt from ohs and wcb regs as they do not get paid. This govt is delusional.

Really? Hutterites exempt from the regs? An uneven playing field is about to get a lot less level in Alberta!

Some of you need to take a deep breath and think. The fact that the Hutterites will be exempt because they aren't paid wages clearly proves that as the Government says this legislation will cover employed farm workers only. Not family farmers, not farm kids, not the neighbour helping you out.
Quite clear it's for farms employing labor, as such it strengthens the smaller family farm versus corporate farms.

Corporate farms and colonies are often on the same scale. This sounds discriminatory to me.

Just wondering, is there anything the NDP would do that would cause some of you to cry foul? Is the Marxist/Leninist force that strong for some of you?

They may be on the same scale and Hutterite colonies are "industrial" looking farms typically but in terms of acres per family they are more like a family farm than corporate agriculture which typically farms a lot of land with very few people.

Next time you visit Killarney Grassfarmer, take a drive 15 miles to the southwest. You'll be at Mayfair Colony. It is more than "industrial looking", it takes industrial to a whole new level. Not paying wages already gives them the unfair advantage (which we all desire) over other commercial farms. If I lived in AB and was facing this discrimination I would not be happy.

My apologies this is for family members that I referenced at the beginning.

Thanks so much WCB is Voluntary for family members in both Alberta and Manitoba
