pretty decent I'd say , no bargains . was looking at 2012 , 8120 combines but they went to high for the shape they were in , they were well used, guess that's why a John Deere dealer put them in there ?

Yup. Anything we were looking at went for what it was worth. Not high, no big deals just an all round average sale for anything we went for.

Farmaholic, I am about 20 years behind in progress, but I noticed a trend. A new zero till seeder is roughly the value of a quarter section of land. A good used big tractor is valued at approximately a quarter section of land. A new sprayer is roughly the value of a quarter section of land. A good used combine is roughly worth a quarter section of land. A new semi and btrains is worth a quarter section of land.
A farmer can tie up a lot of land in a hurry just to borrow for inputs.

Do you have to be on the leading edge of technology to be considered "progressive"? If you want to play that game you may be more broke than progressive.

Direct seeding, more efficient herbicide and fertilizer use, higher yields, farming more acres with fewer passes and people. Overall efficiency.
Re reading my post, that first bit was not the right thing for me to say, i could have left it out and only described the observation about the costs of machinery seem valued very near the cost of a quarter section of land per machine.

I would much rather invest in myself, family and the business, things that I have a understanding and some control over ( excluding weather anomalies ).
Yes depreciation is expensive, I evaluate based on calculated risk / opportunity cost, life staging, priorities, opportunities, etc
Many invest in stock markets, taking advice from a broker they have never met, usually motivated by commissions or otherwise. Investment are made into companies, markets and countries where intimate knowledge, expertise, insider knowledge are very limited to non existent.
