Should we be stopping sales like Argentina farmere do

Sitting here at the desk this morning tring to digest the latest economic news (I may need a pepcid) I have noticed in times of falling currencies and bad govt south American farmers will often hoard grain and stop sales as a hedge against inflation as its probably better to have a tangible product like grain than a worthless product like cdn paper.

Further to this thought sure glad I did buy some paint from down south earlier this summer and fall as well as all my fert came in last week at what is now going to be the lows of the fall/winter I think.looks like the rest of if any purchases will have made in Canada on them. Wouldn't want to be a brock or valley salesman right now.

Argentina is one of the most interesting places in the world to me now for what it's worth. The numbers dont lie.

What can you buy that is made in Canada? Rather than hoarding commodities you and I should have hoarded greenbacks 3 yrs ago. Anytime you can exchange the currency of a third world country like Trudopistan for a first world currency at par you should do that. The amount of debt denominated in $US worldwide will keep $US high for years to come. I do think the comparison to Argentina is a fitting one for Canada's future.

I did buy some US dollars a couple years back but to cover the millions that flow in and out of here over the course of a few short years is pretty tough get on the wrong side of that and find out real fast what ritchie bros number is, we did buy a lot of stuff of US origin from mama deere over the last few years as well as a pivot and bins ( brock) wilson tridem etc. as an on purpose move . Thinking more along the lines of buying meridian , bourgault , maybe macdon, optimum, cdn manufacturers whos products are made with non us steel. Just deciding on a 68 by 150 meridian building their steel comes from Hamilton prices should hold. everyones perfect in hindsight its dealing with where we are that will let you be here tommorrow.

It makes sense to hoard the grain, but what if you need the money to pay operating and mortgages. It seems like cash flows steady at this farm. I seldom hold grain because it has to get turned into cash.

If we side with cotton's thought of runaway inflation, would not want to hold a lot of cash or currency
If we think Errol is right about prospect for deflation, cash is the thing to have.
