Thinking of that lounge scenario, 8 years ago, had I walked past that table of people talking about nutrition, hemp food, organic farming, I know without a doubt I would have said to myself " ha ha ****ing hippies".

Hobby, I envy anyone who can go against the grain, turn conventional to organic and make it. The transition was likely the hardest. It is unbelievable how any weed seeds are in the soil. I swear if you flattened the dirt out with your hand, there would be as many weed seeds as soil particles in new breaking around here. Some seeds must be 100 years old. And as for free range, I was appalled to read that in conventional chicken production, government standards allow less than 1 square foot per chicken (I think around .8)

          Sumdum,
Every living thing wants to grow and propogate. Its just nature. So far I have only experienced 2 real catastrophies for weeds. The answer comes easy, get the disk, work it down.
This year I just finished cleaning the faba beans. Otherwise I have never had to clean any of my production.
Ferility and weed management are very important to growing organic crops. Basically its the same set of rules as any grain farm just a different method to reach the same end result.
Transition was not easy, but I really didnt understand the input supply and grain buying industry, so I was happy to leave it.

Big lentil, there is financial reward ONLY if you get a respectable crop. There are some guys with flax fields so polluted with weeds they will have 3 bu/scre flax and 5 bu/ac weeds. They will get turned away by some commercial cleaners because of the difficulty to separate. BUT they will harvest it because its $40.00/bushel. The hodge podge will sit in their bins for years and they will be sour on flax and organic farming.
I know of at least 2 large farms leave organic and went back to conventional farming when canola hit $14.00/bushel. i dont think of it as big money windfalls but modest profits on every acre if I do things properly.
Obviously I am not gaining properties and wealth exponentially like neighbors but I am content with how I am getting along.

Sorry, cant help it. Reminds me of Les Nessman on WKRP. Throwing live turkeys from the helicopter. "Oh the humanity"

lady sold into states for $45usd a bushel organic flax, 5 bushel an acre wouldn't even be terrible. Probably 10 to 15 bus/acre would be probaby be typical, but im sure 20 very possible.

A 90 bushel per acre crop of milling oats at $7.25/bushel will provide very near the same gross revenue.

Gonna raise some turkeys this year. In the 80's the turkeys hunted down grasshoppers all over the yard. They had breasts as big as DP's.
