Dry Weather in the Forecast — El Nino-like conditions will continue through spring in the Northern Plains. Evelyn Browning-Garriss, who leads, Browning Media, is forecasting a warmer-than-normal winter for North Dakota and South Dakota. Garriss says the mild conditions could mean more insect problems in 2016. If the region has a strong El Nino in 2016, Garriss says it’s likely there will be a La Nina next fall. Garriss' prediction? It will be dry. “If you have wonderful memories of 2012, that was a La Nina,†says Garriss. “If we have a strong El Nino, there’s a 70 percent chance that by autumn, we’ll have a dry La Nina kick in. If you’re growing soybeans, it’s very crucial to keep track of this. August is a key time for pods. If that dry weather starts early, it could impact the productivity of the field. The area that gets hit the worst is the Eastern Cornbelt. In the Dakotas, you have to worry. There, in Indiana, they have to cry.†Garriss encourages farmers to plan accordingly."

New Canadian Joint Venture — Australia-based GrainCorp and Japan’s Zen-Noh cooperative are creating a joint venture that will operate grain receiving sites across Alberta and Saskatchewan. The two companies will have a 50-50 share of the joint venture project. Construction is expected to begin next year and continue through the end of 2018.
