    End of COOL

Uncertainty about how long it will take for our beef and pork industries to recover from US labelling laws but repeal of legislation is something for our producers to welcome.
Was at North Dakota grains group meeting during lead up to to COOL where motion of support was passed. Was also time of complaint about our use of a state trading agency and mandated monopoly in grain marketing, something US growers thought unfair to them.
Think North Dakota grower support for COOL was as much about retaliation for our government protection of wheat board than anything else.
Rather unfair to our beef and pork producers who ended up taking most harm, perhaps if they had it to do over again they would be more supportive of ending wheat board as a trade issue.

Interesting that the canadian buck is now at 70 cents when they need to rebuild their herds.

Canada's herd is on a 30 percent blowout sale.

Back to the tin foil on the coincidence.

Hopalong, COOL was more a result of protectionism spurred by R-CALF once their blockade on Cdn beef due to BSE was wearing off.

The US played it pretty smart - made millions off this for years exhausting every avenue to fight repealing it then when it looked like it might cost them something they repealed it.

At least the Americans were smart enough to realize the value of the CWB - if it wasn't any advantage to Canadian producers why would they protest it?

Also a coincidence that it gets settled near two elections???

Looking back not sure why gerry and lyle were not more vocal over the last eight years.

They didn't come up with any solutions other than to wait.

But it's obvious that it cost cattle guys billions or the US wouldn't have repealed it.

Where is some modest compensation for what cattle guys lost over the past 10 years?

Oh wait prices have been good so we will just write it off as a learning experience.

Now is a good time for the US to buy canadian herds and consolidate them.

Too bad so many young guys had to find something new for a career over the last few years.

Disclaimer: I don't have enough cattle to make a difference ... I call it a bad hobby but I have seen good people leave as gerry and lyle stood idly by for the parade to start.

It really only became an issue for American industry when supplies really began to decline and they realized that they would have to shut down plants that processed Canadian or Mexican animals. Prior to that they were happy to use COOL to **** and pillage. The WTO process is long with many avenues for appeal. We really did not have any other options but to let this process play out. Big poker game in the end as many Americans did not believe the Canadian government would have the nerve to use the right to retaliate. Kudos to people like Gerry Ritz and Ed Fast for sticking to their guns as well as the current government for following through and see this come to an end. Glad its gone but a lot of damage done.

The segregation issues once in U.S. Hands is what really hurt our prices. I do not disagree with a product of North America or something like that. It would be simple and maybe keep a bunch of that cheap offshore stuff reserved to the fast food industry.

Who says it won't be reactivated under a new change only to call it WOOL, as in pulling it over Canadian cattlemen's eyes.

The point is that the US got away with damaging our industry, and those windfalls should be collected back by us until every last nickel is recouped.

They just got away with unjust enrichment.

Wool might have been a good name for it all along. I like that!

It already is Wool. Sheep were left out when they repealed Cool. I hope our politicians don't just walk away and leave this half done.
