    Can i recomend a good book for xmas, called SET ADRIFT ON THE WORLD. by jim hunter.
    It tells the story of the settlement of the red river colony in manitoba by evicted scotsmen from sutherland.

        Another good read about those who settled this land or tried to.
        Sometimes the environment has other ideas.

        Warning: might take forever on a slow internet connection.

          A couple of my favourites are "Braehead" by Sherrill Maclaren follows 3 families from their Scottish roots to becoming 3 of the founding families in western Canada.

          Another good one is "Marie-Anne" by Maggie Siggens. A biography of Louis Riel's grandmother -quite a remarkable woman. The first white woman to go from the Red River settlement across the west and having the first non-native child in each of MB, SK and AB.
