How U.S. gun ownership became a ‘right,’ and why it isn’t

A few weeks ago I had a drunk\stoned first nation trying to break into my house. Had he made the mistake of getting in before the cops arrived ... I am glad I have the right to have a gun or myself and my family would have been in grave danger. He would have not made it the first two feet in my case.
Chucky - what would you say on that?
What happens in the States is their issue, but here in Canada - don't take the guns from the responsible, make crimes with guns far more tougher.
It is a sticky issue for the bleeding hearts but when your family is threatened and the window of safety is only a few minutes... you may change your mind.

Put more guns in the hands Canadians and we'll see how long that stat stays that way. To be honest we are just going around in circles as there really is no issue amongst Canadians to carry concealed guns, yourself and Braveheart both stated your against it.

Just wondering why your so concerned about what's taking place in the USA regarding the gun issue and the Hammonds and Bundies? You seem to be trying to spin both these American problems into a Canadian issues.

In Canada we have had strict control of handguns since 1934. At present you cannot legally transport a handgun unless you are going to a registered shooting range and yet most gun violence involves handguns. If gun control was so effective wouldn't gun violence be eliminated in respect to handguns?

Okay, foragefarmer, let me ask it another way - since our gun control laws are so effective at preventing US-like homicide rates, are you in favor of banning alcohol sales to the general public in order to eliminate deaths caused by impaired driving?

Please keep in mind that Stats Can shows that deaths caused by impaired driving are 10x higher than gun-related deaths in Canada.

Just answer the question and don't bother with the diversion tactics again.

No they should not ban alcohol sales in Canada. In my opinion your causing the deversion, you keep throwing impaired driving into the conversation, next you'll say kitchen knives should be ban to reduce stabbings. I answered to your question about why concealed hand guns need not be carried in Canada, and your of the same opinion.

So again why do you keep bringing up American problems, gun control and the Bundy and Hammond issues and spinning them into Canadian issues.

If you are really concerned about saving lives, then you should be concerned about the fact - and very Canadian problem - of alcohol related deaths which occur at a rate of 10 higher than gun related homicides.

Or are you hyper-selective in your efforts to save lives? Do you need to have someone close to you killed by an impaired driver before you will care?

There is no diversion on my part, but a gross inconsistency on yours.

The reason it concerns me as a Canadian is that we once again have a bleeding heart government in power and PM Kardashian has already voiced his intention of bringing back emotionally-driven, intrusive and USELESS gun control measures.

Now, finally, we are getting somewhere, foragefarmer! You said that you are against drinking and driving - quite reasonable and especially so since it is responsible for 10x more deaths than gun homicides.

But you are not against the use of alcohol, as I am not either. And we likely agree that there is a proper time and place for it, right? And we likely agree that everyone has their preference - some like scotch, some like wine and then there are the beer drinkers...lol!

So why then, are you against general ownership of guns of any kind since their judicious use does not cause anyone harm, and their indiscriminate use is responsible for 1/10th of alcohol-related deaths?

I am just trying to understand the paranoia about a very minor problem when you are relatively silent about a real problem. I believe the expression is straining a gnat and swallowing a camel.


And for the record, I have never in my life driven a vehicle after having something to drink. But then I drink very, very little so it's kind of a non-starter for me, if you will pardon the expression!.
