Freewheat, just wondering about your crop.

Have been wanting to ask a couple times now, how did you make out with the rest of your crop? Sorry to bring up a sore spot. . No comments from any peanut galleries please.

Sore spot, yup! But I don't mind. We have a fair bit of snow, so it is over for now. Around Christmas we got the official amount that took the hope away. Up to then, there was borderline snow amount, and I was waiting for a day without 2 inches of hoar frost to try the faba beans, but it just never happened. Now there is just a bit too much snow. Just hoping what is left winters well. So far so good, but a long way to go yet.

I am struggling mentally to be honest. I am a guy and am supposed to be making a living for my family, but I feel like I fail them. All I can do is wait. The worst thing is the waiting, and the uncertainty over what will be there come spring, and how to cover bills to that point.

We will see. Thanks for asking.

Thanks for the reply Freewheat. Good luck in the spring. Oh ya, one other quick comment. From what you have posted over time on this forum, you are probably making the best living for your family than most. You are providing them with natural farm family grown healthy food, family time, and family love. That is the true meaning of family living my friend.

I hope your crop winters well. Having been forced out myself due to a lot of the same problems (hail, flooding etc) getting a good job off the farm is nearly impossible without good connections. (You may have those) There is 2500 acres on Kijiji for rent in the Killam area if you are tired of being where it snows every day. I am scared of the weather in your region. AB weather is somewhat more benign than eastern SK it seems but we now have the NDP so that is not helping.

Many a farm is around today because one or both of the partners had an off farm career.
Having said that. In todays world there are too many zeros for an off farm job to cover up a problem.
The riskier a geographical area, the larger the operations it seems.
                    Good luck.
