The loss of independents is going to hurt in the long run. Soon everything from soup to nuts will be controlled by the big line companies. Farmers will have zero bargaining power. It's been going on with machinery companies for years now .
Farmers are slowly getting cornerd like sheep in a pen .

This is from Alberta Venture - around 2005.
"Pike believes that the biggest issue farms face today is to reach a size and scale where they are profitable. Expansion allows farmers to spread fixed costs over more acres. “We like to see pure grain farms be in the 5,000- to 6,000-acre range to make the most efficient use of equipment.†Unfortunately, Pike says, while most farmers know the costs for variables like fertilizer and weed sprays, they, “don’t really have a clue how many dollars an acre their fixed costs are. Cost of living, for example, is one area that has really shot up over the last 10 years.â€

A ha ha "they dont really have clue". A ha ha ha .
Methinks Seniore Pike's investors did not have a clue about his cost of living .... A ha ha ha .
just go big, scoop a bunch of cash as it is flowing by. Best case scenario you make a large fortune in a relatively short time. Worst case scenario, you go bankrupt, or the Farm Debt Review Board where they will provide you with a massive write down and then its easier to pay.
